Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition adds a roguelike and a new story

A year after launch, Ghost of Yōtei has been repackaged with the Legends multiplayer mode, a roguelike called Most Wanted and a narrative expansion, Echoes of Sekigahara.

Atsu's hunt is not over. A year after the original game launched, Sony has released the Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition on PS5, packaging the story campaign, the Ghost of Yōtei Legends multiplayer mode and two new major additions into a single release.

Most Wanted, and a returning face

The first of those additions is Most Wanted, a roguelike mode that sits outside the campaign's canon. Erika Ishii, who returns as the voice of Atsu, told PlayStation.Blog that she recorded new dialogue for it and that its tone differs from the main game: "more mystical, in the way that the multiplayer is more mythological. There's a heightened quality to it."

The mode also brings back a face from the series' past. PlayStation.Blog notes that Jin, the lead of Ghost of Tsushima, appears in Most Wanted, with Daisaku Tsuji recording new lines. Ishii said the two of them had talked about the character "before the game had launched", and that the two now joke they are bound together by the role.

Echoes of Sekigahara

The second addition is Echoes of Sekigahara, a narrative expansion written by Courtney Woods. Ishii describes recording it separately from the main game, with at least a couple of months between her last sessions on the base release and the work on new content, after the studio took a break once the original shipped.

Atsu, four years on

Ishii said the role has run for roughly four years of her working life, and that returning to Atsu was informed by finally playing the finished game rather than the work-in-progress builds voice actors usually see. The full conversation is on the latest episode of the PlayStation Podcast.

Our opinion

Repackaging a single-player game a year in is routine. Building a roguelike around a returning Ghost of Tsushima character is not. It quietly turns a self-contained historical story into a shared universe, and it is the first release that tests whether the Yōtei name sells on its own or leans on Tsushima's. Sony spent a year insisting Atsu is not Jin; this is where that claim meets a mode that puts them in the same room.
