Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines gets an RTX remaster mod

A fan-made RTX Remix project is rebuilding parts of Troika's classic RPG, but its public alpha remains an unfinished work in progress.

A community-made remaster project is bringing Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines into the RTX era, with modders Safemilk and Sine rebuilding parts of Troika's 2004 role-playing game through NVIDIA's RTX Remix tools.12

The project is not an official remaster from the game's rights holders. It is an in-development mod, and its public alpha is available through ModDB. The creators describe it as an asset-by-asset overhaul using new models, reworked textures, lighting changes and RTX Remix rendering features.1

What the mod changes

The first alpha focuses on areas of Santa Monica, including the Haven apartments, while also testing broader lighting and emissive-material changes. ModDB's release notes describe a rough work-in-progress build rather than a finished replacement for the original game. They also list unfinished effects and compatibility problems, including flickering lights, water rendering issues, particle effects and full-screen abilities.1

The team says its longer-term aim is to improve environments first, with character models still presenting a more difficult technical challenge. That matters for Bloodlines: the game runs on an older version of Valve's Source engine, so replacing assets while preserving its proportions, mood and animation systems is a substantial undertaking.1

NVIDIA's RTX Remix is the technology behind the project. NVIDIA describes the platform as an open-source toolkit for capturing game assets, enhancing materials and adding features such as path tracing, neural rendering and DLSS Multi Frame Generation.2 The Bloodlines project is therefore part of a wider community effort to revisit older PC games, rather than evidence that an official remake has been announced.

The alpha can be downloaded from ModDB, although its unfinished state means players should treat it as an experimental community project and keep a clean installation of the original game.1 There is currently no confirmed release date for a completed version, and the project should not be confused with the separate rumours surrounding an official Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines remaster.

Our opinion

This is the kind of fan project that makes RTX Remix compelling: it targets a game whose atmosphere is more important than raw visual spectacle, and the available screenshots suggest that the darker streets and interiors still look recognisably like Bloodlines. The caveat is equally important, though. An alpha with known rendering problems is a promising technical showcase, not yet a finished remaster or a reason to retire the original game.
