Deus Ex mod adds Max Payne-style third-person combat

A work-in-progress fan project gives JC Denton a new camera, dual-wielding and Max Payne-style shoot-dodging.

A work-in-progress Deus Ex mod is turning Ion Storm’s classic immersive sim into something much closer to a third-person action game, complete with dual-wielding, new animations and Max Payne-style shoot-dodging. The project is being shown through a series of videos posted by YouTuber dan2091 rather than announced by the game’s original publisher.1

The clips go beyond simply moving the camera. They show JC Denton wearing different outfits, climbing ladders with bespoke animations and using two weapons at once. The dual-wielding system reportedly works in both first- and third-person views, so the mod is changing how the game plays as well as how it looks.1

The most eye-catching addition is a set of rolls and shoot-dodges that let Denton move through fights while firing twin pistols. The animations recall Max Payne, although PC Gamer notes that it is not confirmed whether they were taken from Remedy’s games or recreated for the project.1

That makes this a fan experiment, not a new commercial release or an official Deus Ex revival. The original game was built around a first-person perspective, though later entries such as Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Mankind Divided already used third-person views for cover and takedowns. The mod is therefore pushing an idea the series has visited before, but making it central to the whole game.1

The project is still described as work in progress, and there is no confirmed release date in the available videos. Anyone interested can follow the creator’s channel and judge the unfinished systems for themselves rather than treating the footage as a promised update to the franchise.1

Our opinion

The appeal is obvious: Deus Ex’s dense environments and flexible systems could make a full third-person conversion feel more physical without losing the series’ layered problem-solving. The danger is that movement borrowed from a faster shooter could flatten the deliberate tension that makes the original special. For now, the mod is most interesting as a glimpse at an alternate version of Deus Ex, not as a replacement for the game’s carefully judged first-person design.
