Silent Hill 2 Remake mod cuts traversal stutters in testing

A community patch targets Silent Hill 2 Remake's ray-tracing geometry scheduling, with testing showing substantially better low-percentile frame rates.

Silent Hill 2 Remake has had a stubborn PC problem since launch: traversal stutters that can interrupt an otherwise smooth walk through its fogbound streets. A new community mod, 21 Sacraments Patch, targets one possible cause rather than simply trying to push average frame rates higher. 1

What the mod changes

Created by modder bigbullet3, 21 Sacraments Patch changes how Silent Hill 2 Remake schedules ray-tracing geometry builds. It applies a soft budget of 50,000 primitives per frame, spreading eligible work across several frames instead of allowing a large burst to land at once. 1

That is a targeted fix for a specific rendering workload. It does not increase the game's available VRAM, and the developer warns that unusually large or immediate geometry builds can still exceed the budget. The patch is also experimental, so its results should not be treated as a universal Unreal Engine 5 stutter fix. 1

The benchmark results

Wccftech tested the Steam version at 1440p on an Intel Core i7-14700K with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090, using CapFrameX during a roughly 40-second traversal from Martin Street towards Woodside Apartments. That route was chosen to provoke the sort of movement-related hitching the mod is designed to address. 1

Average frame rate barely moved, from 181.7 frames per second without the patch to 184.6fps with it. The more revealing numbers were the lows: 1% lows rose from 80.7fps to 103.2fps, while 0.1% lows climbed from 45.8fps to 69.8fps, a 52.4% improvement. The test also recorded Adaptive STDDEV falling from 59.8fps to 13.0fps, while the time classified as stuttering fell from 0.21 seconds to 0.03 seconds. 1

Those figures suggest the patch is smoothing out the worst frame-time interruptions rather than making the whole game dramatically faster. That distinction matters. A game already running above 180fps does not need a larger headline average as much as it needs fewer ugly pauses during movement.

What players should know

The mod is currently an experimental beta, version 0.5.2, and its effectiveness will vary with hardware, graphics settings and location. It targets the Steam release and is installed through the archive's Install.cmd file while the game is closed. Once active, F8 toggles the adjustment, with audio cues indicating whether it is enabled. 12

The benchmark was run on high-end hardware, including an RTX 4090, and it covered one deliberately chosen route rather than the whole game. Players on different systems should therefore treat the result as encouraging evidence, not a guarantee. The Nexus Mods listing is the primary place to check the current build and installation details. 2

Konami's remake remains a demanding showcase for Unreal Engine 5, and the community fix is notable because it tackles frame pacing at a lower level than the usual configuration tweaks. It cannot remove every hitch, but the early numbers make it one of the more credible attempts to improve the PC experience without sacrificing the game's fog, lighting or visual density. 1

Our opinion

This is the sort of PC mod that earns attention for the right reason: it measures the unpleasant bit players actually feel. The average-FPS gain is almost irrelevant, while the improvement to 0.1% lows and the sharp reduction in reported stutter are much more meaningful. The caveat is equally important: one high-end test route is not proof that every machine will see the same result. For Silent Hill 2 Remake owners frustrated by traversal hitches, 21 Sacraments Patch looks worth investigating, provided they treat it as an experimental fix and keep a clean backup of the game files.
