Gears of War: E-Day PC VR mod targets full campaign
A free fan-made project is targeting VR support for the entire Gears of War: E-Day campaign, including manual weapons and cover combat.
Gears of War: E-Day has only been available for a little over two weeks, but a free PC VR mod is already in development for the full single-player campaign, according to Road to VR.1 The project aims to put players directly into the fight against the Locust rather than limiting the experiment to a short demo or isolated mode.
What the mod is adding
The creator, known online as rockonthehill, has already demonstrated stereo rendering, full-body inverse kinematics, manual reloads, manual weapon switching and two-handed aiming.1 The planned systems also include fighting from cover and taking the gunner position in a King Raven. Those features are designed to make the campaigns weapons and set-pieces work from a first-person VR perspective.
Road to VR reports that the current plan covers the single-player campaign, not online co-op.1 The mod remains an early work in progress, and its GitHub release is not available yet. The project is expected to build on Praydogs UEVR framework for Unreal Engine games, although the final implementation is still subject to change.
Future updates are set to explore physical melee, Lancer chainsaw interactions without canned animations, collision for hands and weapons, and a working scope for the Longshot.1 The creator says the mod will be free when it eventually releases, but there is no confirmed launch date.
Why this matters
Gears of War: E-Day is built around close-quarters firefights, heavy weapons and dramatic cover transitions. A VR conversion could make those systems feel more physical, but it also has to solve difficult problems: readable weapon handling, comfortable movement, collision detection and motion sickness. The announced features suggest the project is tackling those problems directly rather than simply placing a conventional camera inside the game.
The official Steam listing describes E-Day as the origin story of the series Emergence Day, while the official Gears of War site positions it as a major new entry in the franchise.23 That makes a full-campaign VR conversion a particularly ambitious undertaking. For now, the next meaningful milestone is the creators promised feature-drop video, followed by a public release or repository.
Our opinion
This is the kind of mod that can make a familiar campaign feel new without pretending that a prototype is ready for everyone. Full-campaign support is a much more interesting target than a showcase room, and the listed systems point to genuine work on interaction rather than a superficial camera hack. The sensible approach is to watch the next demonstration, then judge comfort and reliability once players can try the build for themselves.
