Gears of War: E-Day has gone gold. The Coalition's studio head, Mike Crump, confirmed the milestone on 17 September 2026, which means the game's master build is finished and the studio is now pressing discs and shipping files rather than changing the game.

Crump's post also pinned down the practical details players actually need. Pre-install opens on 29 September, Early Access starts on 1 October and the full launch lands on 6 October. Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam all get the game on day one, and it arrives on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass at the same time.

What going gold means for players

Going gold is the point where a game stops being a work in progress and becomes a product. Content is locked, the build has cleared certification and manufacturing can begin. For a release this size it is also the moment a studio stops saying "when it is ready" and starts saying "on this date" — and with pre-install and pre-load windows now published, that date is effectively fixed.

It does not mean the last stretch is quiet. Day-one patches are the norm, and Crump is careful to frame gold as one step rather than the finish line, saying the achievement means the team is "one step closer to players experiencing Emergence Day for themselves".

Pre-install and launch times in the UK

Pre-install begins on 29 September at 15:00 UTC, which is 16:00 in the UK, on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam. Downloading early means the game is ready the moment it unlocks, whether you are playing through Game Pass or have pre-ordered.

Early Access opens on 1 October at 15:00 UTC (16:00 UK), and worldwide launch follows on 6 October at 15:00 UTC (16:00 UK). Premium Edition owners are the ones who get in five days early, on 1 October, while Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members join on 6 October.

The Premium Edition bundles five days of early access, the Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack, five seasonal customisation packs beginning with the Emergence Pack, and 1,000 Iron. Xbox lists it at $99.99 with the standard edition at $69.99, and regional pricing will differ.

Final PC specifications and what they say about the port

The Coalition also published the final PC specifications, split into Minimum, Recommended and Ultra presets that target 1080p at 60fps, 1440p at 60fps and 4K at 60fps respectively. Every tier is built around upscaling, listing DLSS, FSR, TSR and XeSS, and the Ultra preset points at an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti or an AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT paired with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D or an Intel Core i7-14700K.

Two requirements are not negotiable. A solid-state drive is required, and so is a graphics card with hardware ray-tracing support, which rules out the older GTX-era cards entirely. Storage is listed at 115GB across all three presets, memory starts at 12GB and the Recommended tier asks for 16GB.

The feature list reads like a statement about the port as much as the game. Support covers DLSS 4.5, FSR 4 and Intel XeSS 3.0, alongside hardware ray-traced reflections, shadows and global illumination, HDR, ultrawide monitor support and a built-in benchmark mode with advanced PC settings. Shipping a benchmark as standard is the kind of thing PC players have spent years asking for, and its presence suggests The Coalition expects people to tune this game properly rather than accept a default.

What is Gears of War: E-Day?

Gears of War: E-Day is an origin story set 14 years before the original game, following Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago on the day the Locust Horde first erupt from below the surface. It is built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5 and runs at up to 4K and 60 frames per second on a compatible display.

The package is broader than a campaign. Horde Siege rebuilds the series' co-op wave survival mode for larger maps and bigger squads, with four classes — Assault, Marksman, Medic and Breacher — and multiple squads working shared objectives against world bosses. Versus returns as focused 4v4 PvP with ranked and social playlists, and the cover-based combat that defines the series returns with modernised movement and traversal.

Our opinion

Going gold is a small piece of news carrying more weight than it looks. The Coalition has spent the past year showing E-Day rather than talking about it, and a finished build three weeks before launch is the least glamorous possible proof that the schedule held. After a generation reshaped by delays, a studio simply hitting its date is worth noting.

The PC specification is the more revealing document. Demanding hardware ray tracing and an SSD outright, then shipping a benchmark mode, describes a studio that expects its port to be scrutinised rather than a console conversion with a settings menu bolted on. Whether it holds up on launch day is another question, because no specification sheet has ever survived contact with real hardware. But 115GB and a 60fps target across three presets is the shape of a release that was finished properly, not one that ran out of time.
