Street Fighter brings Ken and Ryu's rivalry to cinemas

Paramount Pictures has released a fresh trailer for Legendary Entertainment's live-action take on Capcom's Street Fighter, and it puts the rivalry between Ryu and Ken Masters at the centre of the film. The trailer arrived on Monday, 28 September, ahead of a cinema release on 16 October.

What the film is

Paramount's own synopsis sets the story in 1993, where estranged Street Fighters Ryu, played by Andrew Koji, and Ken Masters, played by Noah Centineo, are dragged back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li, played by Callina Liang, recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament. Paramount describes it as a brutal clash of fists, fate and fury, with a conspiracy behind the tournament that forces the pair to face each other and the demons of their past.

Anime News Network reports that the new trailer leans hard on that relationship, framing the film around how the two friends became rivals rather than around the tournament itself. The official trailer is titled Street Fighter: Ken vs Ryu, so the emphasis is not subtle.

Who is in it

Koji, best known for the action series Warrior, takes Ryu, while Centineo, a fixture of Netflix's teen films, plays Ken. Callina Liang is Chun-Li. David Dastmalchian plays the series' resident warlord M. Bison, and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson appears as Balrog.

Kitao Sakurai, who directed Bad Trip and worked on The Eric Andre Show, is behind the camera. Filming took place in Australia from August 2025. The Philippou brothers, Danny and Michael, were originally attached to direct but left to make Bring Her Back.

The deal that put it in cinemas

This film is the first release under a multi-year distribution deal that Paramount and Legendary signed in December. Paramount distributes Legendary's films worldwide except in China, where Legendary East handles them. Legendary picked up the film and television rights to Street Fighter in April 2023 and is working with Capcom on the adaptation.

The path here was not smooth. Sony Pictures was previously set to distribute the film with a 20 March 2026 release date, then removed it from its calendar in March 2025, which left the project looking for a home until the Legendary deal landed.

A franchise with form

Street Fighter has been adapted before, rarely well. The 1994 live-action film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia, Ming-Na Wen and Kylie Minogue is remembered for Julia's scenery-chewing M. Bison rather than for its fight scenes, and the 2009 spinoff Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li fared worse still. The games themselves are in ruder health: Street Fighter 6 launched in June 2023 and arrived on the Nintendo Switch 2 as a launch title in June 2025.

Our opinion

The hook is right, and that is more than most game adaptations manage at the trailer stage. Street Fighter's story has never really been about the World Warrior Tournament, a premise that exists mainly to line fighters up in a row. It is about Ken and Ryu: two men trained by the same master, one who walked away from the fight and one who cannot stop chasing it. Build a film around that and you have a reason for the punching.

The 1993 setting is the gamble. A period piece trades the games' timeless neon-and-kaiju spectacle for a world of docks, dojos and payphones, which suits a grounded rival story but risks a film about the world's greatest fighters that never quite feels like Street Fighter. The track record of this franchise on screen is an argument for low expectations, and the presence of an actual studio deal and an actual release date is the best counter-argument available. Sakurai is the wildcard: a director who came up through prank comedy now handling a property where the fight choreography has to carry the film. If the duels land, the rest is decoration. If they do not, October will be a very long month for Capcom fans.
