Rise of the Merchants launches in Steam Early Access on 29 October
Rise of the Merchants enters Steam Early Access on 29 October with city-building, trade routes, politics and optional PvP sabotage.
Rise of the Merchants is heading to Steam Early Access on 29 October, bringing city-building, trade, politics and optional player-versus-player sabotage to a persistent medieval world. The release date is listed on the game's official Steam page, which describes a simulation built around expanding a small settlement into a trading city.2
A medieval economy built around trade
The game begins with a small colony. From there, players can construct more than 50 buildings and production facilities, improve them with different materials and upgrade levels, and develop the settlement into a larger commercial centre. Steam describes production chains that turn raw materials into goods, while caravans carry those goods between settlements and player-run markets.2
The roads are not entirely safe. Bandit attacks can disrupt trade routes, so players will need to consider escorts, transport upgrades and political solutions when protecting their economy. The official description also says NPC traders provide a dependable market when player activity fluctuates, while a player-driven economy creates room for specialisation, cooperation and competition.2
Settlers, politics and optional PvP
Each settler has individual skills, traits and needs that can affect production, security and social life. Their abilities can develop through their work, giving players another layer of decisions beyond simply placing buildings. The game also presents several routes to influence: economic strength, negotiation, political connections or more aggressive tactics.2
The optional PvP systems include sabotage and other ways to interfere with rivals. That sits alongside civic and city councils, where political influence can unlock new possibilities. Seasonal changes are also planned for the persistent online world, adding longer-term consequences to the way a settlement develops.2
A recent preview from Infinity Area highlighted the same mix of city construction, production chains, caravans and political systems after exploring the demo during Steam Next Fest.1 The preview also noted that the early version already includes a French translation, although the number of menus and interconnected systems means the game may take time to learn.
Our opinion
The most promising part of Rise of the Merchants is its attempt to connect familiar city-building systems to a living trading network. It is not simply about placing houses and watching a population grow: production, transport, security and politics are meant to affect one another. That makes the 29 October Early Access launch worth watching, though the depth of the simulation will only become clear once more players test how well those systems work together.
