The Legend of California delays Steam Early Access to 2027
Jeff Kaplan and Tim Ford say the survival game needs more time to meet its server-performance targets before launch.
The Legend of California, the multiplayer survival shooter from former Overwatch developers Jeff Kaplan and Tim Ford, will now enter Steam Early Access in 2027 rather than 2026. The delay was confirmed in a recent Reddit AMA, where the developers said the project still needs more time to meet its server-performance targets.
Why The Legend of California was delayed
The game was supposed to be in Early Access by now, according to Kaplan, but Alpha 3 exposed performance problems that meant it did not feel ready for release. The team says the feature and content side is in a good place; the remaining work is focused on making the online infrastructure reliable enough for a multiplayer game built around persistent servers.
That distinction matters for a project as ambitious as The Legend of California. Kintsugiyama describes it as an open-world action-survival FPS set on a mythical Island of California during a gold-rush era. Players can explore, gather resources, craft equipment, build a ranch, establish a mine and fight through PvE encounters, with optional PvP and shared progression for groups.
Kaplan also said the developers have server-performance metrics they still need to hit before launch. It is a less glamorous explanation than announcing another feature, but it is the right problem to solve before Early Access: a survival game that asks players to build up a persistent world cannot afford unstable servers to become its first major story.
What the game is promising
The Steam listing says players will be able to play alone or form a company with up to three other players. The world is designed around gathering, crafting, hunting, combat and expansion, with a ranch and mine acting as long-term projects rather than simple decorative bases.
The developers have also discussed private servers, modding, a more complete mine-collapse and support system, and pets as possible features for the wider project. Those details should be treated as development plans rather than launch guarantees. The immediate milestone is another alpha test on Steam, scheduled for November 12 to November 18, before the Early Access release window arrives.
The game is currently listed on Steam as coming soon. Kintsugiyama has also said that the Early Access launch is planned for the Epic Games Store, while a GeForce Now version is being discussed with Nvidia. The developers do not currently plan to bring the game to consoles during Early Access.
Our opinion
A 2027 delay is not automatically bad news here. The Legend of California is trying to combine the demanding systems of a survival game with persistent multiplayer infrastructure, and the developers have identified server performance as the reason for the delay rather than pretending the original date still means anything.
That does leave the next alpha with more to prove. A strong showing should demonstrate that the town-building, exploration and combat ideas work without the online world becoming a technical obstacle. Until then, the useful headline is not that the game has missed a date; it is that Kintsugiyama has chosen to miss the date rather than launch a multiplayer foundation it does not trust.
The Legend of California is now expected to enter Steam Early Access and the Epic Games Store in 2027. The next alpha runs on Steam from November 12 to November 18.
