What the 4.0.1 update fixes
Nintendo’s patch notes, reported by Nintendo Everything, say the update fixes a disparity in the number of obstacles and Item Boxes appearing during Online Play and Wireless Play on Nintendo Switch 2 compared with Nintendo Switch. 2
The patch also fixes an issue that could stop players selecting a registered user when playing with two players in Online Play or Wireless Play. Some Star Bits were missing while driving on Wii Rainbow Road on Nintendo Switch 2, and another fix addresses the game closing unexpectedly under certain conditions. 2

The fixes are narrow rather than transformative, yet resolving the Switch 2 obstacle and Item Box difference should make mixed-console sessions feel fairer.
If you play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online, it is worth letting the game install version 4.0.1 before your next race.
