Honkai: Star Rail confirms a Zenless Zone Zero crossover

HoYoverse has confirmed that Ellen Joe and Astra Yao will cross from Zenless Zone Zero into Honkai: Star Rail, and it has attached a version number to the event: Version 4.8. The announcement came from the game's own channel on 20 September, hours after the Version 4.6 Special Program finished.

What the announcement actually says

The clip is short and unusually plain for a studio that likes a reveal. It names the two guests, states that the collaboration \"will officially go live in Version 4.8\", and closes by promising more to come. There is no date past the version number, nothing on story placement and no detail on how the pair join the roster.

Version 4.8 is at least two versions away

Version 4.6, Dance With the Beast Before Moonrise, arrives on 28 September, so the crossover sits two version updates or more into the future. HoYoverse has dated neither 4.7 nor 4.8, and Zenless Zone Zero is running its own Version 3.2 while it waits. The version number is therefore an order of events rather than a schedule, and the practical reading is that a date will follow in a later broadcast.

Who is making the trip

Both are established Agents in Zenless Zone Zero, each with a character demo of their own on the game's official channel. Ellen Joe is the shark-themed maid, and Astra Yao is the performer whose design is built around stage imagery and a microphone. The crossover key art puts them together beneath both logos, which points to the pair arriving as a set rather than one at a time.

Our opinion

A crossover between two games that share a publisher is the cheapest spectacle in the industry. There is no licence to negotiate, no partner's brand to protect and no fee to justify, because the properties already share an owner, a client base and a business model. That is exactly why this announcement matters less as an event than as a symptom: Honkai: Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero are competing for the same hours and the same wallets, and the tidiest way to stop a player drifting from one to the other is to make the drift official.

The guest list is the interesting part. Ellen Joe and Astra Yao are two of the more merchandised faces in Zenless Zone Zero, so HoYoverse has booked characters who already carry a fanbase rather than spending the slot on a newcomer. Announcing it during the 4.6 broadcast with 4.8 still two versions out is aimed squarely at anyone weighing up whether to keep spending through a quiet stretch. It will almost certainly work, and it says something about live-service games that the audience being courted is the one already inside the building.
