Golden Swirl brings real-time action to the deckbuilding genre

Snako Production’s dark-fantasy action deckbuilder is out now on Steam with a launch discount, four characters and a great many ways to make a card go wrong.

Golden Swirl is out now on Steam, offering a dark-fantasy deckbuilder for players who would rather dodge a sword than politely wait for their turn. Snako Production and publisher Infini Fun are pitching it as a semi-real-time action card game, where movement, timing and deckbuilding all have to work together before the Swirl eats everything.

According to the launch announcement, Golden Swirl costs $19.99/€20.49/£17.75, with a 20% launch discount running for the first 14 days. Steam lists 9 September 2026 as the release date, while the announcement describes the game as available now. The game is developed by Snako Production and published by Infini Fun.

The central idea is simple enough to explain and presumably harder to survive: control your character to dodge incoming attacks, reposition and then play cards at the right moment. The announcement says there are four playable characters, more than 120 cards, over 100 relics and card modifiers for fine-tuning individual cards. In other words, this is Slay the Spire having a panic attack in an active battlefield.

The campaign spans five procedurally generated acts, with enemies, merchants and swordsmen scattered through the dungeons. Choices affect the so-called Golden Will, which changes combat rewards and resource progression. The announcement says that shift can also alter NPC appearances, what they sell and the cards they provide, including stronger options carrying negative side effects.

The story is suitably apocalyptic. The deities have fallen after the Great Dreamer invades the realm, while a twisted Black Moon becomes a colossal Swirl threatening to devour everything. Players take the role of the Nameless One, the last glimmer of hope, and head into the disaster to uncover what is actually going on. It is all very serious, right up until the card modifiers start turning a carefully planned deck into a small cardboard catastrophe.

The official Steam listing describes Golden Swirl as a fully voiced dark-fantasy, semi-real-time action deckbuilder, and its launch materials point players towards a trailer and the game’s Steam page. There is no substitute for hands-on testing here: the unusual combat rhythm may be exactly what makes the game stand out, or it may make every run feel like trying to play cards while someone throws furniture at you.

Our opinion

The premise is strong enough to earn a look. Card games have no shortage of clever numbers and increasingly elaborate relic spreadsheets, so tying those systems to active dodging could give Golden Swirl a welcome jolt of physical urgency. The launch discount also makes the experiment less painful, although £17.75 is still enough to demand more than a pretty trailer.

Our recommendation is to watch the first player reactions before committing, unless real-time deckbuilding already sounds like your particular flavour of nonsense. Golden Swirl has a distinctive pitch, proper build-crafting depth on paper and a suitably gloomy world; now it needs to prove that the action makes the strategy better rather than simply louder.
