Final Fantasy XVI is now Steam Deck Verified

Valve's compatibility record for Final Fantasy XVI has flipped to Verified, putting the PC version on the handheld's top tier just as Square Enix discounts the Complete Edition to $19.99.

Valve's Steam Deck compatibility data now lists Final Fantasy XVI as Verified, the top tier of the handheld's three-level scheme. The listing changed without fanfare on the store page, and it covers the same PC build that launched on Steam on 17 September 2024.

What Verified means on the Deck

Verified is not a vague badge. A game only keeps it if the default controller configuration is fully functional, controller prompts match the Deck's own glyphs, in-game text is legible on the 1280x800 screen, and the default graphics settings run without the player digging through menus. Valve's compatibility record for Final Fantasy XVI passes all four, and it also lists the game as Verified on the Steam Machine, the living-room PC Valve is preparing.

There is one caveat in the record: the first-time setup needs an active internet connection. That is a common note for games with a launcher or a day-one patch, and it is the only outstanding remark on an otherwise clean sheet.

The discount is live at the same time

The change lands during a Square Enix sale. Final Fantasy XVI is 60 per cent off on Steam at the time of writing, which takes the standard edition from $49.99 to $19.99 in US pricing. The Complete Edition bundles the base game with the Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide expansions, and adds a Buster Sword, Curtana and three orchestrion rolls on top.

The game is the first fully fledged action RPG in the mainline Final Fantasy series. Clive Rosfield's revenge story runs across Valisthea, a world where rival Dominants command the Eikons that decide the fate of nations, and the PC build shipped with the two story expansions included in the Complete Edition.

Our opinion

Verified badges usually make news when they are withheld, not when they arrive, and that is the honest way to read this one. Final Fantasy XVI has run on the Deck since it came to PC, and nothing about the game has changed today; what changed is that Valve's testers have now put their name to it. For a 2023 PlayStation game, that is still worth something, because the Deck's library grows backwards. The best releases for the handheld are increasingly last generation's blockbusters, discounted, patched and finally measured against the hardware. The sale price matters more than the badge: at $19.99, with two expansions included, this is the version of Final Fantasy XVI most people should buy, and it is the version that now carries a recommendation the store can quantify.
