Battlestar Galactica board game returns in a new edition
Ghost Galaxy is bringing Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game back through a new edition and early 2027 crowdfunding campaign.
Ghost Galaxy has confirmed that Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game is returning in a new edition, with crowdfunding planned for early 2027. The announcement revives one of the most sought-after out-of-print modern board games, but it also makes clear that the new version is still some way from a full reveal.
A new edition is on the way
Ghost Galaxy says it has entered an agreement with Universal and Fantasy Flight Games to publish the new edition. The original game launched in 2008 under Fantasy Flight Games, using the television series' setting for a hidden-traitor game about a desperate human fleet trying to reach safety while one or more players secretly work for the Cylons 1.
The publisher says the new release will feature an updated design and will launch through crowdfunding in early 2027. A dedicated crowdfunding page is expected to go live in the coming weeks, but the announcement does not yet confirm a campaign date, pledge levels, price, player count or a release timetable beyond that broad window 1.
Why this matters
The original Battlestar Galactica game became notoriously expensive after going out of print, particularly for players trying to assemble the base game and its three expansions. That scarcity turned it into a regular recommendation for collectors hunting for a modern board-game “holy grail”, while later spiritual successors such as Unfathomable kept the hidden-traitor formula alive without restoring the licence.
Ghost Galaxy is led by Christian T. Petersen, who founded Fantasy Flight Games and oversaw the original game's publication. That gives the project a direct link to the earlier release, although it is too soon to know whether the updated design will preserve the original's long-form tension or make substantial changes for a new audience 1.
What we know so far
For now, the confirmed details are deliberately limited: this is a new edition, it has an updated design, and crowdfunding is planned for early 2027. Ghost Galaxy has not yet shown the new rules, box art, components or a complete product page. The campaign launch should answer whether this is a careful modernisation of the 2008 design or a broader reworking of the Battlestar Galactica board-game formula.
Our opinion
This is exactly the sort of reprint announcement that earns attention without pretending the important questions have already been answered. The project's strongest early signal is the team behind it: Petersen knows the original game and the market that still remembers it. The sensible response is curiosity rather than a preorder verdict. Until Ghost Galaxy shows the updated design and explains how the licence is being handled, the comeback is promising news, not a finished product.
