Seismic Squirrel is bringing its narrative RPG to PlayStation and Xbox in 2027, with two new Steam quests arriving alongside a temporary discount.

Aether & Iron is taking its floating, crime-soaked version of 1930s New York beyond the PC crowd, with Seismic Squirrel announcing PlayStation and Xbox versions for 2027. The console news arrives alongside two new story quests and a short Steam discount, so the game is bringing both a new audience and a little extra plot to the party.

What's actually going on

According to the announcement, Aether & Iron will come to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S in 2027. Seismic Squirrel has not announced a specific release date or detailed the differences between the console editions, saying further information will follow later.

The same update adds two side quests in Nations Crusade on Steam at 3 p.m. Pacific Time, or 11 p.m. BST, on September 15. One quest gives Gia and Benny time together, exploring their relationship and the people behind the smuggling crew. The other digs into the aether research taking place in Nations Crusade and the anti-gravitational technology that has reshaped the game’s world.

The game is also 20% off on Steam from September 14 through September 21 as part of the Steam Party-Based RPG Festival. The Steam version is currently available for Windows and macOS, with full English voice acting and text localisation in English, Spanish, French, German, Polish, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese and Simplified Chinese, according to Seismic Squirrel.

The game follows Gia, a smuggler navigating crime syndicates, political conspiracies and fragile alliances in an alternate 1930s New York transformed into a vertical city by the discovery of aether. The announcement says player choices affect relationships, outcomes and the fate of the city, with writing talent credited on Mass Effect, Far Cry and Sovereign Syndicate. The score comes from Christopher Tin and Alex Williamson, whose credits include the Civilization series.

Why you should care

A narrative RPG built around choices needs more than a stack of dialogue boxes and a suspiciously dramatic soundtrack. Its appeal rests on whether the world, relationships and consequences make those choices feel weighty. The two new quests are a useful test: one focuses on character chemistry, the other on the setting’s central mystery.

The console announcement also gives Aether & Iron a second chance at visibility. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One support keeps the potential audience broad, while the lack of a firm 2027 date means this is still a promise rather than a launch plan. Console players should not clear a weekend just yet.

Our opinion

This is a sensible expansion, not empty platform confetti. Aether & Iron has a distinctive premise, and adding character-focused and world-building quests before courting console players is the right order of operations. The catch is that “coming in 2027” is doing a lot of heavy lifting: until Seismic Squirrel gives us a date and platform-specific details, this remains one to watch rather than one to pre-order.

PC players interested in narrative RPGs should give the demo or the discounted Steam version a look, while everyone else can wait for the console release details. The aether may defy gravity, but release schedules still have to obey it.
