Diablo V is already in full production, Blizzard says

Diablo V is not sitting in a dusty concept folder waiting for Blizzard to remember it exists. The team says the action RPG is already in full production, with a 100-year leap into a Sanctuary where Diablo has won and the old world has been thoroughly wrecked.

What's actually going on

Speaking to IGN, Game Director Joe Shely, Narrative Director Jennifer Helper and Production Director Tiffany Wat said Blizzard has been working on Diablo V for some time and is now in full production. The story jumps a century beyond Diablo IV: Sanctuary has fallen, Diablo sits on the throne of Westmarch and the Western continent is under his control.

Blizzard is also bringing back procedural world generation for both the overworld and dungeon systems. The developers say the aim is to make discovery unpredictable again, with twisted regions and monsters changing across the worlds players load into. There will be more classes than in any previous Diablo game, according to the interview.

This is not a replacement for Diablo IV. Blizzard says the current game will continue receiving support, while Diablo V develops separately. The next game will not use the familiar open-world town structure either: the interview describes survivors moving from region to region because Sanctuary's towns have been destroyed.

Why you should care

The best part of this update is that Blizzard is not treating a sequel as a content pack with a new coat of demon blood. A destroyed Sanctuary gives the team room to make the setting feel dangerous again, while procedural regions could bring back the uncertainty that later Diablo systems often sanded away. The risk is that ‘more classes than ever’ becomes marketing fog unless each one actually changes how the game is played.

Our opinion

A Diablo sequel where Diablo has already won is exactly the kind of grim hook the series needs. Full production is encouraging, but it is not a release date and it is certainly not proof that every ambitious system will survive development. For now, Diablo V looks less like a victory lap and more like Blizzard finally giving Sanctuary permission to be properly terrifying again.
