1999TOKOYO Building (1999トコヨビル) will launch on Steam on 10 November, with a demo covering the entire first chapter available ahead of release.1
The horror adventure follows Akira, who becomes trapped inside the mysterious TOKOYO Building. Players investigate its 360-degree low-poly environments, break into rooms and build relationships with the building's unusual employees through visual-novel-style conversations.12
A full first chapter to explore
The demo is expected to offer around two hours of play, including character interactions and the game's lock-picking-focused exploration. The full release is being developed by Tokoyo Fudosan, a team comprising writer Mitsuki Nagase, illustrator and Live2D modeller Shingetsu Ogino, and game designer and engineer Aoi Minato.1
Steam describes 1999TOKOYO Building as an adventure game about uncovering secrets and escaping an indoor amusement park that has become a dangerous, crumbling home for its staff.2 The store listing also confirms English and Simplified Chinese support alongside Japanese.2
Our opinion
A substantial first-chapter demo gives 1999TOKOYO Building a more useful launch hook than a bare release-date announcement. Two hours should be enough to show whether its mix of lock-picking, exploration and character conversation can sustain the unsettling premise, while the Steam listing makes the game easier for curious PC players to sample before November.
The contrast between a brightly lit theatre and the story's warnings about disappearances is doing a lot of work here. If the full game can turn that cheerful façade into a genuinely readable mystery rather than relying only on jump scares, it could be one to watch for horror-adventure fans this autumn.
