Zenith: Nexus is shutting down on December 18

Ramen VR will permanently close Zenith: Nexus in December after its VR MMO failed to sustain a long-term player base.

Zenith: Nexus is shutting down permanently on 18 December, with Ramen VR saying the live-service VR MMO is no longer viable to operate at a loss.1 The closure affects the Steam version and the game's Meta Quest, Rift and PlayStation VR2 releases.1

The shutdown timeline

Ramen VR has set the final server shutdown for 10am Pacific time on Friday 18 December.1 The free Zenith: Nexus client is expected to remain available to new players until 18 November, while existing players can continue using the service and spending their remaining Zennies until the final closure.1

The developer has also stopped sales of the game's The Last City downloadable content and premium currency, although the DLC was still listed on Steam when the report was published.1 Players should therefore treat the December date as the real end point rather than expecting a transition to an offline mode: the game will no longer be accessible once the servers go down.1

Why Zenith is closing

Zenith: Nexus grew out of Zenith: The Last City, an anime-styled open-world VR MMO that launched in January 2022. Ramen VR later reorganised the project into two connected modes: the original open-world experience and Infinite Realms, a free-to-play, session-based action RPG built around procedural co-operative runs.1

The studio previously said that hundreds of thousands of players had tried Zenith and that the game initially became one of Steam's best-selling titles. But Ramen VR later said most players stopped playing after roughly a month, while continued development failed to improve retention enough to support the service.1 New content development ended in 2024, leaving the studio maintaining the servers without a sustainable pipeline of updates.

For players who still have progress to finish, the remaining window is clear: the servers stay online until 18 December, but the game is being wound down in stages. The Steam listing confirms that Zenith: Nexus is a live service rather than a game that can simply be kept running locally.2

Our opinion

This is a familiar but still grim ending for a VR MMO. Zenith appears to have found an audience at launch, yet a strong first wave of players could not become a stable long-term community. The important detail for owners is that this is a permanent online shutdown, not a quiet content pause. Anyone still invested in its world has a finite amount of time to play before the service disappears.
