Twilight Pretender is coming to Steam in English and Chinese
Liar-soft's shapeshifter romance Twilight Pretender is listed for PC on Steam with English, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese support, and no release date yet.
Twilight Pretender, the next visual novel from Japanese studio Liar-soft, will ship with English, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese text on PC via Steam. The store page lists all three languages, and YOZAKURA is named as the publisher.
The premise, as the store page tells it
Hiroto Takenouchi is visited the day after a break-up by his ex-girlfriend, Chise Kawamoto - except the girl at his door is not Chise. She calls herself Kageko, a shapeshifter that devours living things and wears their shape, and the real Chise is still alive somewhere. The pitch line on the store page is blunt about the setup: “I'll become your ideal girlfriend. So... please, give me just one more chance.”
To get the real Chise back, Hiroto has to play along and become the boyfriend of the thing wearing her face - for a limited time. The description leans into the question of what happens when the arrangement stops being an arrangement.
No date, and no window either
Steam currently lists the release as coming soon, with no window attached. That is the honest state of it: the three-language support is confirmed on the store page, and everything else is still to be dated.
Our opinion
Japanese visual novels used to reach the West years late and in English only, in single-language releases that made the format feel like a niche import. Listing Simplified and Traditional Chinese alongside English at announcement is a marker of how much that has changed: the audience for these games is now a combined one, and publishers plan for it from the start instead of bolting on a translation after the fact.
The premise also does something harder than it looks. A story about a creature that eats people and copies them can slide into pure horror, but framing it as a relationship Hiroto has to maintain turns the dread into something domestic and daily. If Liar-soft sticks that landing, this will be remembered for the hours it spends on the boyfriend arrangement rather than the reveal.
