Touhou Koumakyou physical edition launches December 17 in Japan
The remaster’s Japan-only boxed edition includes a classic-version code, soundtrack player and reversible cover art.
Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic – the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil will receive a physical release for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch in Japan on December 17, Shanghai Alice Reprise has announced.1
The shoot ’em up remaster’s boxed edition will cost 5,610 yen on Switch 2 and 4,400 yen on Switch. It is being positioned as more than a standard game card release, with several extras bundled into both versions.1
What the physical edition includes
Each package contains a copy of Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic – the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, alongside a download code for the classic version of the game and another code for a soundtrack player. The set also includes reversible cover art styled after the original 2002 release, character and bullet-hell stickers, and Marisa’s Guide to Resolving Incidents.1
The new physical edition is currently announced for Japan, so the details confirmed so far do not establish a Western boxed release. The remaster itself is already available digitally worldwide on PlayStation 5, Switch 2, Switch and PC through Steam.12
That makes the December package particularly aimed at fans who want a curated physical version of the remaster and a set of archival-style extras, rather than players waiting for the game to become available for the first time. The included classic-version code also gives the release a direct link to the long-running history of the series.1
Our opinion
A physical edition makes sense for a game with Touhou Koumakyou’s history, especially when the extras are tied to the original release and the wider world around the game rather than being disposable promotional filler. The Japan-only announcement is a limitation for international collectors, but the contents give this package a clearer identity than a routine reprint. For anyone already interested in the remaster, the reversible cover and classic-version code are the stand-out additions; everyone else can still sample the game digitally before deciding whether the boxed set is worth importing.
The December 17 launch currently applies to Japan, with no wider physical-release date announced.1
