Myst and Riven remakes are getting physical editions this September

The remakes of Myst and Riven are getting the collector-friendly treatment they have been quietly begging for: physical editions. Limited Run Games, working with original developer Cyan Worlds, says both puzzle adventures will return in boxed form for PC and console later this year, giving fans a chance to own something rather than merely licensing a download into the digital void.

Pre-orders open on Sept. 18 and remain open for one month, closing on Oct. 18. The announcement lists standard editions at $39.99 / €44.95 / £40, with the Myst version coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC, while Riven is listed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PC. Those prices are the press release’s MSRPs; regional shop pricing and shipping can still have the final word.

There are also Big Box editions at $64.99 / €71.95 / £65. Myst’s package includes Big Box PC packaging, the standard edition, a soundtrack CD and a 12-by-16-inch double-sided poster. Riven’s package is described with the same broad extras: Big Box packaging, the standard edition, soundtrack CD and poster. The PC versions include a digital Steam key in the box instead of a disc, because apparently even a boxed nostalgia trip needs a tiny detour through a download client.

For anyone who missed the original games, Myst began on a mysterious island in 1993, asking players to investigate Ages and solve environmental puzzles while piecing together its story. Riven pushes that formula into a collapsing world of jungles, caverns and enormous structures. Cyan says Myst and Riven have sold more than 15 million copies combined, while Myst alone has been played by more than six million gamers, according to the announcement.

The appeal here is obvious: these are not random retro reprints, but modern remakes of two landmark puzzle adventures, packaged with the sort of physical extras that make a shelf look considerably more interesting. Whether the Big Box premium is worth it will depend on how much that soundtrack and poster matter to you, but the standard editions look like the sensible gateway. Pre-order details will appear on the Limited Run Games website on Sept. 18.
