Tokyo Game Show 2026 closes with 257,642 visitors

Tokyo Game Show 2026 closed on 257,642 visitors across the four days it managed to run, with a record 1,138 exhibitors and TGS 2027 already dated.

Tokyo Game Show 2026 is over, and 257,642 people walked through Makuhari Messe in the four days it managed to open. The fifth day never happened: with Typhoon No. 25, known internationally as Dujuan, closing on the Kanto region, the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association cancelled the whole of Monday 21 September and moved the final day's stage content online instead.

What the four days actually drew

CESA's own closing figures put Thursday's business day at 53,630, Friday at 52,545, Saturday's first public day at 78,678 and Sunday at 72,789. The 21 September row is the one marked cancelled, with no real-venue opening at all. That totals 257,642 visitors, against 263,101 in 2025 and 274,739 in 2024, both of which also ran four days. Set the typhoon aside and the gate is still down roughly two per cent on last year and six per cent on 2024.

Where 2026 does break records is the floor itself. CESA counted 1,138 exhibitors from 53 countries and regions, up from last year's 1,136, spread across 3,999 booths - the widest international spread in the show's history. The business side set its own high-water mark, with 3,673 meetings booked through the TGS business matching system, the most the organisers have ever recorded.

The fifth day became a broadcast

Twenty-five official programmes went out across the run on YouTube, X, Twitch and niconico, with DouYu and bilibili carrying them into China and IGN handling the west. Inside hall one, the event stage held the keynote, the Japan Game Awards 2026 Future Division ceremony and a 30th-anniversary panel that brought together the producers of games also turning 30 this year.

Monday's stage content survived where it safely could. An invitation-only Street Fighter 6 exhibition called Red Bull Revenge ran from 10:30 to 13:10, matching eight top players across four bouts built from the scene's most combustible rivalries, and the show signed off with an ending stage at 15:00. Both went out on the organisers' own channel.

TGS 2027 is already dated

The next show is fixed for 16 to 20 September 2027 at Makuhari Messe, which is five days again. That gives CESA a second attempt at the format it was advertising all year, after a run that was billed as the longest in the show's 30-year history and ended up matching the usual four.

Our opinion

The number CESA will want to talk about is 1,138 exhibitors. The number it should be talking about is 3,673. Across comparable four-day shows the public gate has now fallen two years running - 274,739 in 2024, 263,101 in 2025, 257,642 this weekend - while the business matching floor quietly set a record. That is the shape of a show that increasingly belongs to the industry rather than the crowd, and it is not automatically bad news, but it does mean the anniversary stages and the spectacle spending are buying less footfall per yen than they used to. The online programme is the more interesting experiment: 25 shows carried across platforms that include DouYu and bilibili is a serious attempt to sell a Japanese trade show into markets whose visitors will never fly to Chiba. Convert that audience into booked meetings and the day a typhoon took will read as a footnote.
