Japan Game Awards names 10 most-wanted unreleased games
CESA's Future Division has named ten unreleased games as its 2026 winners, chosen by a public vote that ran for three days during Tokyo Game Show.
Tokyo Game Show handed out its last prizes of the year on Sunday. CESA published the ten winners of the Japan Game Awards 2026 Future Division on 20 September, announced from the event stage at 13:00 and streamed on YouTube, X, Twitch, DouYu and bilibili.
The Future Division is the part of the Japan Game Awards that points forward. Only unreleased games qualify, and only ones announced or exhibited somewhere inside TGS 2026 - including titles that appeared purely inside official exhibitor streams rather than anywhere on the show floor.
How the vote worked
The shortlist is not a jury's alone. Voting opened at 10:00 on 17 September and closed at 16:00 on 19 September, three days in the middle of the show, with one vote per person and no restriction on age, nationality, gender or where a voter lives. A selection committee then reviewed the poll and settled the final ten, and CESA ran the whole thing with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in support.
The ten winners
Bandai Namco Entertainment takes two of the ten slots with Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve and Gundam Rogue Orbit. Square Enix holds two as well, in Final Fantasy VII Revelation and Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United.
The rest of the list is Castlevania: Belmont's Curse from Konami, Danganronpa 2x2 from Spike Chunsoft, SEGA's Stranger Than Heaven, Atlus's Persona 4 Revival, Capcom's Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, and Magical Girl Taboo Village from Re,AER and Good Smile Company.
Where they will actually be playable
All ten are confirmed for Steam, which is the closest thing to a common thread in the list. Nine are down for PlayStation 5 and nine for Xbox Series X|S - Magical Girl Taboo Village is the sole holdout, arriving on Switch and Steam. Nintendo's new machine appears five times: Danganronpa 2x2, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Persona 4 Revival, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance and Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United all list Switch 2.
Our opinion
A most-wanted poll is a different instrument from an award: it measures anticipation rather than quality, and anticipation is the thing that evaporates on contact with a release date. The shape of this list is still revealing. Three of the ten - Danganronpa 2x2, Persona 4 Revival and Final Fantasy VII Revelation - are revivals or reworkings of games their audience already loves, and they took most of what TGS had to offer. That is not a knock on any of them, but it is a vote of confidence in familiarity rather than nerve. The genuinely new bets, Re,AER's Magical Girl Taboo Village and SEGA's Stranger Than Heaven, sit in the same list without a marketing history behind them and will need one now. CESA at least made the shortlist work for its medal: three days of public voting plus a committee review is more scrutiny than most reader polls get. The ten titles will carry that into every trailer for two years. Whether five of them ever leave Switch 2's release calendar is a separate question.
