The AmiGoonies brings The Goonies back to Amiga
The in-development Amiga tribute to the 1986 MSX classic adds a new AGA cave, music, effects and performance improvements.

The AmiGoonies is an in-development Amiga tribute to the 1986 MSX game The Goonies, with its latest update adding a new AGA build and a substantial cave area. The project is being made in celebration of the original game’s approaching 40th anniversary.
Indie Retro News reports that the homebrew project is designed for Commodore Amiga systems, using the Scorpion Engine to revisit the original’s platforming, puzzles and colourful screens. It is still in development, so this is a progress update rather than a finished release announcement.
What’s actually going on
The new AGA build adds a cave with a large map, new hazards, waterfall effects and 24-bit Copper gradient backgrounds. The update also includes two new music tracks inspired by the MSX original, improved enemy behaviour, performance work and bug fixes.
The developer says the AGA update is available now, while an OCS version will follow later. The project has been tested on real A1200 hardware as well as WinUAE and FS-UAE emulators. Graphics, levels, music and gameplay systems remain subject to change as development continues.
The original The Goonies game appeared on C64, Atari 8-bit, Apple II and MSX before later versions reached ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC. This Amiga project is presented as a personal bridge between the developer’s MSX and Amiga influences, rather than an official Konami production.
Why you should care
Retro projects often live or die by whether they understand the machine they are targeting. The promised scrolling, large sprites, colourful maps and hardware-aware presentation suggest this is aiming to feel like an Amiga game, not merely a resized remake.
The cave update is a useful sign of momentum, but readers should keep the unfinished status in view. Features are experimental, the OCS build is still to come, and no final release date was stated in the source report.
Our opinion
The AmiGoonies has exactly the right kind of retro ambition: it treats the original MSX game as a starting point while giving the Amiga hardware something to show off. The AGA update sounds like a meaningful step rather than a token version bump, especially with a new cave, fresh music and performance improvements.
The sensible verdict is enthusiastic but provisional. This is one to follow, not one to call finished. If the developer can carry the same care into the OCS version and final release, the Amiga may get a lovingly built Goonies adventure before the anniversary arrives.
