Team Fortress 2 opens Scream Fortress XVIII with five new maps
Valve has launched Scream Fortress XVIII in Team Fortress 2, adding five community maps, a 23-item case and a fresh set of Halloween contracts.

Valve has switched on Scream Fortress XVIII, the eighteenth Halloween event in Team Fortress 2, and once again the headline additions are community made. The event is live now and runs until 7 November 2026.
The update arrives as a standard server-side patch. There is no battle pass and no new paid mode: what players get is a batch of community maps, a new cosmetic case, a fresh set of Halloween contracts and a long tail of community-submitted bug fixes.
Five new community maps
Five community maps join the Halloween rotation this year: HolyHell, Scarypass, Trainsawlaser, Medi-Evil and Scaredy-Cat. They sit alongside the returning Scream Fortress line-up and can be reached through the Special Events category in Casual.
A 23-item case and 21 new Unusual effects
The Haunted Hoard Case is the year's centrepiece drop. It contains 23 community-created cosmetic items that make up the Haunted Hoard Collection and carries a chance to award a Taunt Unusualifier as a bonus item.
Valve has also added 21 new community Unusual effects, split between 11 for hats and 10 for taunts, and five new community-contributed taunts to the Mann Co. Store: Hippocratic Hypocrite, Showrunner's Spirit, Barrel Roll, One-Eyed Punt! and Sear You Later. Cosmetic and taunt cases opened during the event will grant Halloween 2026 Unusual effects instead of their usual ones, with crates excluded.
Soul Gargoyles and reset contracts
Everyone who launches the game receives a Soul Gargoyle if they do not already own one. It unlocks Merasmissions and Halloween item transmutations, tracks the missions completed and the souls collected, and feeds souls gathered by killing enemies, finishing map objectives or picking up the gargoyles that spawn in the maps.
All Halloween contracts have been reset so they can be completed again, and Valve has added new contracts for this year's featured community maps. Finishing one yields a classic Halloween item and a chance at a Haunted Hoard Case.
A long list of community fixes
Beyond the event content the patch sweeps up dozens of community-reported fixes. They include ÜberCharge response rules failing to play on Halloween items, a misplaced muzzle attachment on the AWPer Hand, a client crash tied to a missing HUDAutoAim element, a TFBot crash when control points moved, and a bug where cosmetics attached to ragdolls refused to cloak when a player was killed with a weapon such as Your Eternal Reward.
Valve credited each contributor by name in the patch notes, a practice that has become as much a part of the Halloween update as the maps themselves.
Our opinion
Scream Fortress has quietly become the most reliable event Valve runs. Eighteen years in, it is still being built by the people who play the game rather than by a live-service roadmap, and that is exactly why it keeps landing. A map pack and a cosmetic case would be thin fare for most shooters, but Team Fortress 2's audience treats the Halloween drop as a community reunion, and the patch notes read like a thank-you note to the people bug-testing the game for free. The one thing worth watching is how long that goodwill can carry an event with no new weapon or mode attached; the answer, for now, appears to be at least another year.
