TAITO Milestones 5 launches on Switch in Japan on 28 January
TAITO’s fifth arcade collection brings 10 games from 1978 to 1990 to Nintendo Switch, with a Japanese launch set for 28 January 2027.
TAITO has announced TAITO Milestones 5 for Nintendo Switch, with the fifth collection scheduled to launch in Japan on 28 January 2027. Reservations are now open in Japan, according to the publisher’s announcement. 2
The compilation brings together 10 arcade games released between 1978 and 1990. TAITO says the line-up includes Space Invaders, Sagaia in its three-screen version, Marine Date, Front Line, Extermination, Arkanoid: Revenge of DOH, Plump Pop, Final Blow, Crime City and Hat Trick Hero. 2
The collection is being developed with support from Hamster, the company behind the Arcade Archives range of classic-game ports. That makes TAITO Milestones 5 a particularly interesting package for preservation-minded players: it is not just a compilation of the publisher’s most recognisable hits, but a mixture of famous arcade staples and less familiar machines from the same period.
What we know
TAITO’s official product information lists Nintendo Switch as the platform and 28 January 2027 as the planned release date. The announcement also gives the game a CERO B rating in Japan. 2 The publisher has not confirmed a Western release date, international availability or pricing in the primary information checked for this story, so those details should not be assumed from the Japanese announcement.
The visual identity is led by Space Invaders, but the selection reaches well beyond that landmark shooter. Sagaia is notable here because the collection includes its unusual three-screen arcade version, while games such as Marine Date and Crime City offer a glimpse at the breadth of TAITO’s 1978–1990 catalogue. The result should appeal both to collectors who want a tidy historical snapshot and to players looking for arcade curiosities that have not received the same attention as the company’s biggest names.
TAITO is also marking the announcement with a new official Space Invaders tournament. The publisher says the event will be held in collaboration with Takadanobaba Game Center Mikado, with the competition returning after roughly 10 years. The event is tied to the collection’s announcement rather than being a feature of the Switch software itself. 2
Our opinion
TAITO Milestones 5 looks strongest when treated as an archive with personality rather than another greatest-hits bundle. Space Invaders gives the collection an obvious headline, but the promise of a three-screen Sagaia and several deeper cuts is what gives it a reason to exist alongside the earlier volumes. The missing piece is a confirmed release plan outside Japan: until TAITO provides that information, this remains a Japanese launch announcement rather than a worldwide Switch date.
The official TAITO Milestones site lists the series and links through to the fifth volume, while the publisher’s announcement supplies the confirmed date, line-up and tournament details. 1 2 Further information about international distribution and pricing will be needed before the collection’s availability for UK and European players is clear.
