Squadron 42 brings Mark Hamill back into the spotlight on Steam Frame

Mark Hamill is back in the spotlight for Squadron 42, while an official Steam Frame demonstration raises questions about VR support.

Squadron 42 has put Mark Hamill back in the cockpit — and the latest official update offers a glimpse of how the long-awaited single-player campaign is being shown off.

Mark Hamill returns as Steve Colton

The official Squadron 42 account shared new images of Mark Hamill in his role as Lieutenant Commander Steve “Old Man” Colton. Hamill is best known for playing Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, but he has been part of Cloud Imperium Games’ cinematic space adventure for years.

The images show Hamill alongside the production’s spacecraft and team. They are a reminder that Squadron 42 is being built around a film-style cast as much as its space combat and exploration.

The Steam Frame connection

The same official post says Hamill tried Squadron 42 using Valve’s Steam Frame headset. That is an intriguing demonstration, but it is not confirmation that the finished game will support virtual reality. The post shows the game being tested with the hardware; it does not announce a VR mode or change the published release plans.

That distinction matters because Squadron 42 is currently listed on Steam for PC, with its release window set for the second quarter of 2027. The Steam listing describes a single-player adventure in which players pilot combat ships, fight on foot and work alongside a crew during a galactic war.

What this means for the release

The update adds visibility rather than a new launch date. Squadron 42 remains scheduled for Q2 2027, and the Steam Frame demonstration should not be read as evidence of a confirmed VR version.

It does, however, show Cloud Imperium Games continuing to put the campaign in front of players. With Hamill once again at the centre of the imagery, the project is leaning into the star power and cinematic presentation that have defined its public identity from the beginning.

Our opinion

The Steam Frame detail is the more interesting part of this update, precisely because it raises a question without answering it. A headset demonstration is not a VR announcement, but it gives fans something concrete to discuss while they wait for the much bigger reveal: whether Squadron 42 can finally turn its unusually long development story into a finished campaign.

For now, the safe takeaway is simpler. Mark Hamill is back in the spotlight, the game is on Steam, and the current release target remains Q2 2027.
