Sony reveals Japan-only Midnight Black PS5 for November 2026

Sony's black PS5 Digital Edition launches in Japan on 19 November, but account and language restrictions keep this colourway firmly regional.

Black PlayStation 5 Digital Edition console and DualSense controller

Sony has revealed a Midnight Black version of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, but this is not a worldwide colour refresh. The console launches in Japan on 19 November, and its account and system-language restrictions make it a distinctly local model.1

What Sony is launching

The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black is a Japanese-use-only console with an 825GB SSD, the same core PS5 features and a recommended price of ¥55,000 including tax. Sony is also releasing a matching Midnight Black disc drive on the same day.1

The official announcement says the console can be used only with a PlayStation account set to Japan and a console language set to Japanese. That means this is more than a black shell for the existing international Digital Edition: Sony is positioning it alongside the Japanese-only PS5 model already sold in the country.1

Pre-orders begin from 20 October through Japanese PlayStation retailers and online shops. The matching disc drive is listed at ¥11,980, while the console ships with a DualSense controller and the usual cables and accessories.1

Why the reaction is mixed

The hardware itself is familiar, with Sony retaining the PS5's fast SSD, 3D audio and PS4 backward compatibility. The black finish also matches accessories such as the PlayStation Portal remote player, giving the range a more coherent look.1

The catch is availability. PlayStation LifeStyle reports that players outside Japan cannot buy the model for normal use, while the official announcement's account and language requirements explain why. A global Midnight Black PS5 would be a straightforward way to answer long-running requests for a darker standard console; this version instead ties the colour to a restricted regional SKU.2

Our opinion

The Midnight Black finish looks like the PS5 colour many players have wanted, but the Japanese-only account and language rules make it difficult to treat this as the long-awaited global redesign. For UK and European readers, the meaningful news is what Sony has not announced: there is still no international release date for this colourway.

Sony's Japanese announcement is the stronger source here because it confirms the release date, price and restrictions directly. The fan frustration is understandable, but the most useful takeaway is practical: do not import this model expecting it to behave like an unrestricted UK or European PS5.
