Pang MD brings an arcade classic to the Sega Mega Drive

DavidGames has released playable beta builds of a fan-made Mega Drive take on the balloon-busting arcade classic.

Pang MD is bringing the balloon-busting arcade formula to the Sega Mega Drive, with developer DavidGames offering a playable beta while the project continues in development.1

A new 16-bit take on *Pang*

The project has been in development since 2020 and is designed around the classic premise: pop bouncing balloons as they split into smaller, faster threats. DavidGames says the game is being built for the Mega Drive and that AI-assisted tools are helping speed up work across this and other long-running projects.1

The developer's itch.io page currently offers several beta builds, including Pang_Beta_0.75.bin. The latest update lists fixes for ice stages, item behaviour, crashes, large-ball collisions and a platform bug that could trap the player in stage 42.1

The original Pang launched in arcades in 1989 before Ocean Software brought it to home computers including the Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum, Amiga, MS-DOS and Atari ST.2

What happens next

This is a fan-made work in progress rather than a newly announced commercial release. The available beta suggests the core idea is already playable, but the developer still lists physics, collision, performance and resource work among the remaining tasks.1

Our opinion

A Mega Drive version of Pang is a natural fit: the arcade original is built around a clean rule, readable sprites and escalating chaos rather than hardware-heavy spectacle. DavidGames' beta is worth watching because it is already tackling the hard part — making those bouncing, splitting balloons behave consistently across a full set of stages. It is not finished yet, but the project has a clear identity and a playable build rather than just a promise.
