RuneScape launches its first community plugins
Jagex has launched RuneScape’s first five approved community plugins inside the game, with a new hub for players and developers.
RuneScape’s official Plugin Hub has opened its doors, giving players a set of community-made tools inside the game client rather than through an outside launcher. Jagex says the first release includes five plugins from the open beta: Quest Helper, Menu Entry Swapper, Tilemarkers, Entity Hider and Job Gauges.1
What launched
Quest Helper supports 69 quests, while Tilemarkers lets players mark useful locations in the game world. The remaining tools focus on interface customisation and visibility. Jagex says plugins must support gameplay rather than replace it, and all submissions go through an official approval process.1
The launch also opens RuneScape’s development environment and submission process to new plugin creators. Jagex is hosting the tools through mod.io, and players need a verified email address to access them. The company recommends using the email linked to a Jagex Account, although other addresses can be used.1
How to access the Plugin Hub
Players can find the Plugin Hub through the in-game Ribbon menu by looking for the toolbox icon. From there, they can browse available plugins, install them, manage permissions and remove anything they no longer want. The exact location of the icon differs between classic, modern and custom interface layouts.1
There are limits to what the first tools can do. Jagex says Menu Entry Swapper cannot add a “Buy All” shop option or make “Teleport” and “Drop” default left-click actions. Those restrictions come from the current RuneScape API rather than the plugin developers, with feature requests being filtered through an API Council.1
What happens next
Jagex plans to release more plugins in batches as moderation progresses, with future updates expected to add tools such as Clue Trainer and Ground Items. The company describes this as the first stage of a longer-term API project, rather than a finished replacement for established third-party plugin platforms.1
Our opinion
This is a sensible way for Jagex to bring RuneScape’s plugin ecosystem into the game without throwing the door open to unchecked automation. The initial line-up is practical rather than flashy, and the approval process should make the Plugin Hub easier for cautious players to trust. The important test will be whether Jagex can expand the API without allowing convenience tools to flatten the game’s progression or create a new moderation headache. For now, an in-client hub with clear limits looks like a useful first step rather than a revolution.
PCGamesN reports that the first five plugins are available now and highlights the same access requirements and gameplay restrictions.2
