Jagex cancels RuneScape Reignited after player backlash
Jagex has cancelled its proposed RuneScape reset after players objected to separate characters, economies and membership concerns.
Jagex has cancelled RuneScape Reignited, the proposed reset of its long-running MMO, after players rejected the plan’s fresh characters, separate economy and additional membership concerns. The developer said it had “missed the mark” and would not move forward with the project. 1
What happened
Reignited was announced as a way to bring new and returning players into a cleaner version of RuneScape, with a new economy and a reset progression path. That pitch quickly ran into a problem: existing players feared the project would split the community while leaving their established characters behind. The controversy followed Jagex’s earlier promise that Reignited would launch on 2 December alongside a 10-day free access period. 2
Jagex’s cancellation statement, quoted by GamesRadar+, acknowledges that player feedback changed the company’s course. Associate creative director Mod Ryan said the team’s goal was to grow RuneScape without doing so at the expense of its existing community. He also pointed to the game’s 2012 Evolution of Combat overhaul, which helped split the audience between modern RuneScape and Old School RuneScape. 1
What happens next
The cancellation does not appear to scrap the wider RuneScape roadmap. Jagex says the existing game will continue to receive its planned updates, while the developer still wants to attract new players. That leaves the studio with a harder but healthier task: improve onboarding and modernise the game without asking veterans to choose between their history and a new server.
Our opinion
This is the right call. A reset can make an old MMO easier to approach, but it also risks treating the players who kept that world alive as inconvenient baggage. Jagex has bought itself some goodwill by listening quickly; the next test is whether it can use that goodwill to make the live game welcoming without splitting it again.
