The Rogue Prince of Persia turns one with a Freeze update

Evil Empire's 1.1.0 Anniversary Update for The Rogue Prince of Persia adds a Freeze element, weapon affixes and a run stats screen a year after launch.

The prince mid-leap through a purple-lit ruined chamber, scarf trailing behind him as a scythe swing bursts enemies into sprays of red and black ink.

The Rogue Prince of Persia has turned one, and Evil Empire has marked the occasion with the Anniversary Update. Version 1.1.0 is live now, a year after the game left early access, and the studio says the roguelite has passed one million players. It is also, by some distance, the biggest pile of changes the team has shipped in a single drop.

The headline addition is Freeze, a new element that finally gives the game a proper status effect to build around. Stack it twice and an enemy is frozen solid and its attacks interrupted; when the ice cracks it goes off in a heavy damage burst. Enemies standing in water pick up two stacks at once, and a kick shatters a frozen foe on contact, which turns Freeze into a repositioning tool as much as a damage dealer.

Evil Empire says the update exists because the team spent a year watching where players quit. Its patch note names three exit points: very early on, when the first boss is a wall; somewhere around two to four hours, once experienced players have a first completed run under their belt; and at 15 to 20 hours, when the story is finished and the credits effectively roll for that player.

A gentler start and a meaner endgame

The opening hours have been rebuilt around that data. Wallrunning sections are now mandatory in places, a fix aimed squarely at everyone who cheesed General Berude with the air dash, and wallrunning now fills the Vayu bar so staying airborne actually pays. Zagros and Aqueduct have been compressed to cut down the run back you do after every death.

Difficulty tuning works in both directions here. The early game is friendlier, but the studio says it raised the challenge later on so that the story has room to hook players before they finish their first run, which is a more thoughtful use of a difficulty curve than simply shaving numbers off the first boss.

New gear, a stats screen and a nastier final boss

There is a run stats screen in the Oasis and at the end of a successful run, and weapons now roll with up to four affix slots, graded Bronze through Diamond and rerollable at Astara's shop. Critical builds have been reined in, with new Critical Sharpener medallions offered as compensation, and the update adds chaotic 'Suspicious Chest' combat arenas for anyone who wants a fight they did not ask for.

Further down the list: the final boss has been reworked, mob density has been reshuffled, elites now drop medallions and there is what the note calls a mountain of quality-of-life fixes. If you want the numbers, the extended patch note runs to 15 pages.

An update that is late, and says so

The Anniversary Update was originally pencilled in for summer, and Evil Empire is upfront about missing that window. 'We know we announced this update for summer so we are wayyyyy late,' the announcement reads. 'But hey, technically there are still 4 days of summer left, right?!' Whether that holds depends on whether you go by the meteorological calendar or the astronomical one, so the joke just about lands.

Our opinion

Most roguelites patch their endgame first, because that is where the loudest players live and where the streamers keep going back. Evil Empire has gone the other way. It spent its birthday update on the first hour: the wallrun tutorials, the pacing, the first boss that was quietly filtering out everyone who never learned the movement. That is the least glamorous work a studio can do and quite possibly the most valuable, because a roguelite that loses you at hour one never gets to show you hour twenty.

The critical damage nerf is the other decision worth watching. Nerfing the build that a chunk of the player base has spent a year optimising is never going to be popular, and instead of pretending otherwise Evil Empire has done the maths, cut the numbers and thrown in new Critical Sharpener medallions so that the players who lost their damage have something fresh to chase. A nerf that arrives with an apology and a replacement toy is a much healthier way to do balance work than a silent patch, and it is the clearest sign yet that this studio is still genuinely invested in a game it could easily have walked away from after 12 months.
