Resident Evil Apocalypse details reveal scrapped open-world Resident Evil 9

A report attributed to insider Dusk Golem outlines the alleged open-world Resident Evil 9 concept that Capcom scrapped before Resident Evil Requiem.

Resident Evil 9 may once have been a very different game, according to new claims attributed to series insider Dusk Golem and reported by My Nintendo News. The alleged working title was Resident Evil: Apocalypse, a single-player open-world project that was ultimately scrapped as Capcom reshaped the game that became Resident Evil Requiem.1

What the report claims

The reported details describe a fictional island in Singapore, vehicles, an infection meter inspired by Resident Evil Outbreak, and the BSAA as antagonists. Jill, Leon, Ada and Sheva were reportedly planned as protagonists alongside two new characters, with Chris Redfield arrested after the events of Resident Evil Village.1

The account also claims the project shifted during development. Leon allegedly became the main protagonist, Jill was first retained as an AI assistant before being cut, and the idea of a character experiencing terror for the first time evolved into Grace, one of the central figures in Resident Evil Requiem.1

Treat it as an unverified development report

These are insider claims about a cancelled version of the game, not an announcement from Capcom. Dusk Golem has also described the scrapped Apocalypse concept in posts on X, including its open-world vehicle plans and its connection to the later Resident Evil 9 project.2 Neither source establishes that the reported design documents or every listed detail were officially confirmed.

The story is still interesting because it sketches a possible route from an open-world, action-led experiment to the released survival-horror game. But the important distinction is that Resident Evil: Apocalypse remains a reported cancelled concept, not a game players can expect to play.

Our opinion

The most useful part of this report is not the imagined feature list; it is the glimpse into how a large horror sequel can change direction. An open-world Resident Evil with vehicles and an infection meter would have been a radically different proposition from Resident Evil Requiem. Until Capcom comments, though, these details belong in the rumour column rather than the series canon.
