NEXT: The Portopia Serial Murder Case launches 4 March 2027
G-MODE’s new detective adventure launches on Switch, Switch 2 and Steam with five new investigation files and a Japanese-only language option.
G-MODE has confirmed that NEXT: The Portopia Serial Murder Case will launch in Japan on 4 March 2027 for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam. The company has also opened reservations for the physical Switch editions, while the digital and Steam versions will launch on the same date.12
The new title expands the 1983 detective adventure The Portopia Serial Murder Case with five new investigation files supervised by executive director Yuji Horii. It is set in 1980s Kobe and follows a new cast of characters as they investigate a series of murders, gathering witness statements and physical evidence through a menu-driven command system.23
What is included
The physical release will come in Standard and Limited editions. Both include the original Famicom version of The Portopia Serial Murder Case on the game card. The Limited Edition adds a deluxe box, an A5 booklet and an original soundtrack CD. The digital and Steam editions contain the new game only.12
The new game will be sold in Japanese only, according to the Steam listing. G-MODE lists the digital edition at 4,800 yen, the standard physical edition at 7,678 yen and the Limited Edition at 9,878 yen.13
The project is being developed by room6 and Game Studio, with character designs by Kyoji Asano of WIT Studio. The official material describes it as a new detective experience built around shifting perspectives and five additional investigation files rather than a straight port of the 1983 original.13
Our opinion
The useful detail here is that this is more than a release-date announcement for a familiar name. The five new investigation files give NEXT: The Portopia Serial Murder Case a clear reason to exist, while the inclusion of the Famicom original makes the physical versions a neat history lesson for players who want to compare the old and new approaches. The Japanese-only listing will narrow its immediate audience, but the March 2027 launch gives curious detective-adventure fans plenty of time to decide whether the new case files are worth following.
The Steam page is already live for wishlisting, although the game is not available to play yet. That makes “launches on 4 March 2027” the accurate wording for now, rather than “out now”.
