Lair of the Leviathan announced for Nintendo Switch

Deck13 Spotlight and two development teams have announced a pixel-art open-world RPG for Nintendo Switch, due in 2027.

Lair of the Leviathan is bringing a classic-style open-world RPG to Nintendo Switch in 2027, with turn-based battles, pixel-art visuals and a party of customisable adventurers at its centre. The game was announced by publisher Deck13 Spotlight with developers Nostalgic Realms and Whiskeybarrel Studios, although there is no firm release date yet. 1

Set in the world of Ormande, the game asks players to head into a dangerous western frontier filled with rival rulers, bandits, monsters and dungeons. The announcement describes a world where players can follow the main story or wander away from it in search of side quests, hidden areas and their own adventures. 1

A party RPG with old-school ambitions

Combat is turn-based and built around positioning, abilities and enemy weaknesses. The announced bestiary ranges from goblins and slimes to spectral knights and five-headed hydras, with battles taking place across dungeons, mountains, deserts and stranger locations. The developers also promise a paperdoll-style character system that shows the equipment each hero has collected. 1

Lair of the Leviathan is clearly looking back to the open-ended role-playing games that shaped the genre. The announcement specifically points to Ultima, Pools of Radiance and the early Baldur’s Gate games as inspirations, while adding modern quality-of-life features and a pixel-art presentation. 1

The party itself is player-created rather than built from a fixed cast of companions. Townsfolk will follow daily schedules, weather will change, and the world will continue to operate around the player’s decisions. The developers also say that its lore will be delivered through shorter conversations and discoverable scrolls rather than walls of exposition. 1

What we know about the Switch release

The Nintendo Switch version is currently planned for 2027. Deck13 Spotlight, Nostalgic Realms and Whiskeybarrel Studios have not announced a specific launch date, additional platforms or pricing. The announcement trailer is available through the source coverage, but more details will be needed before the game’s release window becomes clearer. 1

Our opinion

A party-built RPG with an open world, tactical battles and a deliberately classic visual style is a promising combination, particularly on Switch, where a slower adventure can work well in handheld play. The danger is that nostalgia can become a substitute for structure: Lair of the Leviathan will need meaningful exploration and genuinely interesting party choices rather than simply a pixel-art coat of paint. For now, its premise is strong enough to put on the watch list, but the eventual trailer and a confirmed release date will tell us much more.

The game is not out yet, and there is no reason to treat the 2027 window as anything more precise than a target. We will need to wait for further details from Deck13 Spotlight and the development teams before judging how closely it matches its classic RPG ambitions.
