Housemarque co-founder Ilari Kuittinen leaves PlayStation studio after 31 years

Ilari Kuittinen has stepped down from Housemarque after 31 years, with Sami “Haxu” Hakala taking over as managing director in July.

After more than three decades helping shape Housemarque, co-founder Ilari Kuittinen is leaving the PlayStation studio. His departure marks the end of a long run that stretches from Finnish arcade experimentation to the modern PlayStation era.

What’s actually going on: Housemarque says Kuittinen’s final day was at the end of August. He co-founded the studio with Harri Tikkanen and said he plans to take a break from the games industry beginning in September.

Sami “Haxu” Hakala became Housemarque’s managing director on 1 July, with Kuittinen supporting the transition through August. The change is therefore a leadership handover, not an announcement that Housemarque is closing or cancelling a project.

Kuittinen’s exit comes after 33 years in the games industry, according to the report. Housemarque’s history includes arcade-inspired action games and the studio’s later PlayStation work, including Returnal. The studio is also working on Saros, although no change to that project has been announced in connection with Kuittinen’s departure.

Why you should care: founders leaving a studio can be emotionally significant without automatically signalling trouble. Leadership transitions happen for many reasons, and the available announcement does not speculate about Housemarque’s future or provide evidence of wider disruption.

Our opinion

Kuittinen’s departure is a genuine end-of-an-era moment for Housemarque, but it should not be inflated into a crisis story. The respectful handover to Hakala and Kuittinen’s planned break suggest a measured transition. We wish him a proper rest — preferably somewhere with fewer deadlines and no one asking when Saros is coming out.
