Helldivers 2 adds poisonous Terminids and bug caves

Helldivers 2 adds poisonous Noxious Terminids and expands bug caves into more biomes, changing how squads move and fight.

Helldiver faces poisonous Terminids in the Helldivers 2 A Cleaner Galaxy trailer

Helldivers 2 is turning its bug war into an altogether nastier proposition. Arrowhead Game Studios has added a new Noxious Terminid strain, with poisonous enemies that can damage a Helldiver's health, blur their vision and eventually stop them sprinting. The same update also expands the game's underground bug caves to more biomes, including scorching deserts and frozen tundras.1

What is new

The update introduces the Noxious Scavenger and Noxious Spewer. They are not simply tougher versions of familiar Terminids: their poison creates a separate combat problem that can make a familiar swarm harder to read and harder to escape. Arrowhead says heavy poisoning affects a player's health, vision and ability to sprint, while a stim can cure the condition.1

That combination should make positioning more important. A player who is already surrounded by smaller bugs cannot rely on sprinting away once the poison takes hold, and a hazy screen makes it more difficult to pick out the next threat. The result is a threat that attacks the squad's ability to recover, rather than only adding another large target to its list.

More places for bugs to hide

The update also changes where Terminid cave networks can appear. According to the official announcement, bug caves can now show up across more biomes, including scorched deserts and frozen tundras.1 That matters because the caves are not just another piece of scenery: they create enclosed spaces where a squad has less room to kite enemies and fewer clear escape routes.

Arrowhead's accompanying trailer presents the change under the A Cleaner Galaxy campaign, pairing the Helldivers 2 branding with a deliberately bright, playful visual style before returning to the game's familiar bug-squashing premise.2 The promotional framing is cheerful; the practical effect for players is less forgiving. More cave locations mean more missions where the terrain itself can turn a routine breach into a close-quarters scramble.

What it means for squads

The new enemies appear designed to push teams towards better spacing and more deliberate use of support equipment. A Helldiver caught in poison may need a teammate to cover an escape route while the affected player uses a stim. Squads that spread too far apart could also find themselves unable to help when a cave entrance produces a rush of Terminids.

The announcement does not describe a separate price, platform change or paid expansion attached to this content. It presents the Noxious Terminids and broader cave spawns as part of the current Helldivers 2 experience, available on November 3.1 That makes this a gameplay shake-up rather than a new product tier.

Our opinion

This is the sort of update Helldivers 2 needs: not just another enemy with a bigger health bar, but a complication that changes how a squad moves through a mission. Poison that interferes with sprinting and visibility should make panic more consequential, while caves appearing in more biomes can keep familiar objectives from feeling too predictable. The test will be whether the effect stays readable and fair when several status effects and Terminids arrive at once, but the idea is stronger than a routine content drop.

The most promising detail is the interaction between the two additions. Poison is dangerous in the open, while caves restrict movement; together they could create encounters that demand communication rather than a single high-damage solution. For a co-op shooter built around spectacular failure, that is a useful new source of tension.
