Haunted Chocolatier is shaping up as a bigger action RPG

Eric Barone says Haunted Chocolatier will lean harder into exploration, gear, progression and boss fights, but the game still has no release date.

Haunted Chocolatier is taking a more action-focused route than Stardew Valley, with creator Eric Barone describing a game built around exploration, equipment, character progression and boss fights. The long-awaited project still has no release date, and Barone says he will not rush it. 12

A bigger role for combat and exploration

In a new British GQ interview, Barone says Haunted Chocolatier will put considerably more emphasis on action-RPG systems than his farming-life hit. Players will explore, find better equipment, grow stronger and fight monsters and bosses, while the new game's town, characters and chocolate business keep a social and creative layer at its centre. 1

That does not make it a straight combat game. The chocolate shop remains a core part of the experience: players will gather ingredients, make sweets and sell them in a new town. The official website's development posts also show Barone continuing to iterate on practical details such as the recipe-book interface, where he says ease of use and presentation need repeated refinement before release. 2

Barone has previously described the project as more metaphysical and supernatural than Stardew Valley, with ghosts and spirits helping shape its world. The latest details fit that direction: the game is aiming for a familiar loop of community, collection and crafting, but with a stranger atmosphere and more direct danger outside the shop. 12

Still no release date

There is no launch date to mark down. The official website says Barone is still making progress and refuses to compromise the game's quality by releasing it too early. He has also warned that the project remains substantial and that revealed footage should not be treated as proof that development is nearly finished. 2

That patience may frustrate fans who have been waiting since the game was announced, but it also means the current information should be read as a direction of travel rather than a final feature list. Barone is working largely alone, and systems, presentation and content can still change before launch.

Our opinion

The action-RPG emphasis is a smart way to separate Haunted Chocolatier from Stardew Valley without throwing away the warm, small-town appeal that made Barone's first game special. The real test will be whether combat and progression feel as considered as the shop and social systems. For now, the most honest update is simple: the game is still being made, and it is not ready to serve yet.
