Fable’s main quest is expected to take around 15–20 hours, Xbox says
Playground Games reportedly expects Fable’s main quest to take 15–20 hours, with another 15–20 hours of side content and open-world exploration.

The upcoming Fable reboot may not be trying to consume the next six months of your life. According to comments attributed to Playground Games staff during a Gamescom group Q&A, the main quest is expected to take around 15 to 20 hours, with another 15 to 20 hours of side quests and open-world exploration.
What’s actually going on: VGC reports that associate game director Will Kennedy gave the estimate during the Q&A. Kennedy reportedly described “around 15-20 hours” of mainline quest gameplay and roughly the same amount of side and open-world exploration content.
Kennedy also described the game’s “life systems” as effectively limitless. A further response from associate game director Craig Little reportedly stressed that players could continue interacting with the world for as long as they wanted, even if the core adventure is not enormous by modern open-world standards.
Those systems centre on Albion’s population. The game is reported to include around 1,000 NPCs, including roughly 400 in Bowerstone. Each character is described as having their own home, hobbies, traits and personality, with fully voiced interactions that react to the player’s actions.
The figures are estimates rather than a promise of a fixed completion time. They also do not tell us exactly how much optional exploration sits outside the reported side-quest figure, or how deep the life-sim interactions will feel once players are free to poke Albion’s citizens in the face — socially, we hope.
Why you should care: enormous playtime is not automatically the same thing as value. A focused 15-to-20-hour main story can be perfectly healthy if the pacing is strong, while a reactive world with persistent characters can provide the replayable texture that makes a shorter campaign feel alive.
The reported structure also fits Fable’s history. User-submitted HowLongToBeat estimates put the main stories of the first three games at roughly 12.5, 13 and 13.5 hours respectively, suggesting the reboot’s critical path may be broadly in keeping with the series rather than chasing a 100-hour checklist.
Fable is currently scheduled for release on 23 February 2027, following its delay from late 2026.
Our opinion
A 15-to-20-hour main quest sounds reassuringly civilised in an age when some games treat your free time as an enemy to conquer. The real test will be whether Albion’s 1,000 residents feel like people rather than decorative quest dispensers. If the life systems deliver, Fable could be short enough to finish and rich enough to keep revisiting — which is a much better trick than simply making the map enormous.
