Dragon Quest Monsters adds cross-platform co-op and ranked battles
Square Enix has detailed cross-platform co-op, ranked competition and new arena modes for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World ahead of its December launch.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is expanding its online side with cross-platform co-operative battles, ranked competition and new arena content. Square Enix’s official website says the game will support Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam, with the console and PC versions launching on 3 December and Steam following on 4 December. 1
Cross-platform co-op
The official system update describes Online Joint Battles, where up to four Monster Masters can team up against giant monsters. Players can also tackle the mode alone, while online communication features support the wider multiplayer experience. The platform list means players will not be restricted to matching with friends on the same console family, although the publisher has not detailed every matchmaking limitation. 1
Ranked matches and the arena
The game’s ranked competition will include Master Ranked Matches with seven ranks, according to 4Gamer’s reporting on the update. The offline arena will offer Battle and Co-op Battle modes, giving players a separate route into competitive or structured fights without relying on the main story progression. Those details come from secondary reporting and should be treated as attributed information until the relevant official system pages spell out the same rules. 2
The official site also confirms that the game is being built around a broad multi-platform launch rather than a single-console release. Steam’s store listing provides a separate reference for the PC version and its 4 December date. 3
What this means for launch
The online features give The Withered World a clearer multiplayer identity than a basic monster-collecting campaign. Co-op battles should make the game more useful as a shared activity, while ranked matches provide a longer-term reason to keep refining teams after the story. The important unknown is how the cross-platform ecosystem will handle progression, matchmaking and moderation, none of which Square Enix has fully explained in the material checked for this update.
Our opinion
This is a meaningful development rather than a routine website refresh. Cross-platform co-op can widen the audience for a traditionally solo-focused series, and seven ranked tiers suggest Square Enix is planning for competition beyond launch week. The open questions around matchmaking and progression matter, but the combination of co-op, ranked battles and an arena gives Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World a more substantial online pitch than the earlier announcements suggested.
