Red Hook Studios has released Darkest Dungeon II on Nintendo Switch 2 as a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Existing Switch owners can upgrade through a $2.99 Upgrade Pack, while the game is also available on PlayStation, Xbox and PC. 1

The Switch 2 edition targets 1080p in handheld mode and 1440p when docked, with a 60fps target. It also adds fast driving and combat options, alongside support for the Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. 1

That makes this more than a straight platform port. The higher resolution should give the game’s heavily illustrated battle scenes more room to breathe, while the faster combat option addresses one of the more deliberate parts of its roguelike road-trip structure. The mouse controls, meanwhile, give Switch 2 players another way to select commands in a game built around menus, abilities and target selection.

The upgrade is available through Nintendo’s eShop listing, and Red Hook’s announcement makes clear that owners of the first Switch version do not need to buy the full game again. 1 The original game’s Steam listing also identifies Red Hook Studios as both developer and publisher, and describes Darkest Dungeon II as a roguelike journey centred on a party, a stagecoach and a doomed attempt to avert an apocalypse. 2

For anyone arriving on Switch 2, the important detail is the pricing split: this is a new edition for new buyers, but a relatively inexpensive upgrade for existing Switch owners. The feature list is focused on performance and controls rather than new story content, so returning players should not expect a new campaign attached to the platform release.

Our opinion

The Switch 2 Edition sounds like a sensible technical upgrade rather than a thin re-release. A 60fps target, higher output resolution and faster combat are all useful changes for a game that can make players stare at the same battle interface for a very long time. The $2.99 upgrade price is the strongest part of the announcement: it gives existing Switch owners a cheap route to the improved version without pretending that a handful of platform features is a full sequel.
