Lucky Duck Games is preparing a detective-driven cooperative Blade Runner 2099 board game with a story separate from Amazon’s TV series.

Lucky Duck Games has revealed Blade Runner 2099: The Board Game, a narrative-driven cooperative adventure that will tell a different story from Amazon’s upcoming Blade Runner 2099 television series. The tabletop game is planned for a Kickstarter launch next year, and its campaign page is already live for notifications. 1

A separate case in the same world

The game was shown during Spiel Essen, where Lucky Duck Games revealed the box and shared early details about the project. According to IGN, it will be a detective-based cooperative adventure in which players work together while a companion app provides narration and other digital support. 2

The setting also flips a familiar element of the franchise. In this story, humans are the persecuted group, rather than the replicants who have traditionally occupied that position in much of Blade Runner’s fiction. That gives the board game room to explore the setting without simply retelling the plot of the television series or recycling the same conflict.

Lucky Duck Games’ official Kickstarter page describes the project as a moody adventure driven by player choices and guided by a companion app. The page identifies Lucky Duck Games as the creator and labels the campaign “launching soon”, but it does not yet provide a full rules explanation, a final release date or a complete component list. 1

The app-based structure is a significant part of the pitch. Digital narration can help a campaign deliver atmosphere, branching prompts and hidden information without asking a player to manage a thick stack of scripted cards. It also creates a dependency that traditional board games do not have: buyers will reasonably want to know how long the app will be supported and whether the core experience remains usable if the service changes.

How it differs from the television series

The project shares its name and broad universe with Amazon’s Blade Runner 2099, but the two are not the same story. IGN reports that the board game may have its own characters and case, with no confirmed crossover details at this stage. 2 Amazon’s series is expected to explore a future Los Angeles through a new television narrative, while Lucky Duck’s game is being built around group investigation and player decisions.

That separation should help both projects. Fans can approach the board game as a new case in the setting instead of treating it as an interactive adaptation of the show. It also gives Lucky Duck Games space to design its mechanics around cooperation, deduction and consequence rather than trying to reproduce scenes that already belong to the screen version.

Our opinion

A detective-focused cooperative game is a natural fit for Blade Runner, provided the companion app supports the table instead of becoming the whole experience. The early pitch has the right ingredients: a distinct case, a meaningful shift in perspective and a format built around shared investigation. The Kickstarter campaign will need to answer the practical questions about app longevity, replayability and component quality, but this is a more promising direction than a board game that simply turns the television series into a set of location cards.
