Arkane Lyon gets more time to find a buyer and finish Marvel's Blade

Arkane Lyon has been given more time to find a buyer or partner while it continues work on Marvel's Blade.

Microsoft has extended the consultation period around Arkane Lyon, giving the French studio more time to find a buyer or development partner while it continues work on Marvel's Blade. The move does not guarantee the studio's future, but it means a closure is not the immediate conclusion to the process. 1

Why Arkane Lyon was at risk

Arkane Lyon is the French developer behind Dishonored 2 and Deathloop. Polygon reports that Microsoft announced a major Xbox workforce reduction in July and that Arkane Lyon was subsequently placed among the studios facing potential closure. France's labour rules require large companies to explore options for a studio before shutting it, including the possibility of finding a buyer. 1

That consultation had been expected to run towards a 13 November deadline. According to a Microsoft representative quoted by Polygon, the company has now extended it by one additional month while it explores options, including finding a partner to support the work still ahead on Marvel's Blade. The representative also said documents indicating a possible closure were part of the required consultation process rather than a final decision. 1

What this means for Marvel's Blade

The extension matters because Arkane Lyon remains attached to Marvel's Blade, the single-player third-person game set in Paris and starring Eric Brooks, the half-human, half-vampire hero. Marvel's official game page lists the project as being developed by Arkane Lyon and Bethesda in collaboration with Marvel Games. 2

Polygon also reports that union representatives at Arkane told French newspaper Le Monde that Marvel's Blade was nearing the end of development. That is not the same as a release announcement, and neither Microsoft nor Bethesda has provided a launch date in the material available here. The project is therefore still best described as in development rather than close to release. 12

The game's public announcement trailer remains the clearest official look at the project. It was published as the Marvel's Blade announcement trailer and carries Marvel, Arkane Lyon and Bethesda branding. 3

Our opinion

This is a reprieve, not a rescue. Extending the consultation gives Arkane Lyon a better chance of finding a partner and gives Marvel's Blade more time to reach the finish line, but it does not remove the commercial and organisational pressure behind the process. The encouraging part is that the studio's work is still being discussed as something worth supporting, rather than being treated as an abandoned project.

For now, the most useful update is simply that the door is still open. Fans should resist reading the extra month as a release-window signal, but it is meaningful news for a team whose future had looked increasingly narrow. If Microsoft can find a buyer or partner, Arkane Lyon may yet continue independently; if it cannot, the consultation will only have delayed a difficult decision.
