Archrebel Tactics gets a fresh demo

Archrebel Tactics adds a standalone demo mission, deeper squad-management systems and destructible environments ahead of its full release.

Archrebel Tactics has a fresh demo for players who like their science-fiction strategy games deliberate, destructive and a little old-school. The new build adds a standalone mission with its own story and lore, giving curious players a self-contained way to try the game while development continues.1

The game draws openly from Rebelstar, Laser Squad and the original X-COM, but its tactical layer is more than a nostalgia pitch. Players have to manage action points, equipment, morale and stamina while positioning a squad across battles where parts of the environment can be destroyed. Outdoor encounters can lose trees, plants and some rocks, while doors inside bases can also be broken through.1

The demo offers ten human character classes and four starting loadouts. That gives the opening mission some room for experimentation rather than forcing every player into the same squad shape. Controllable droids and an emphasis on alternative approaches add further ways to approach an encounter, while a scoring system is designed to reward players who want to replay missions and refine their tactics.1

The latest demo is available on Steam, while the game's itch.io version was described as out of date by the source report.1 Steam lists Archrebel Tactics as an in-development turn-based strategy game from MicroProse and Ularis Badler, with a release date still to be announced.2

Our opinion

A standalone mission is a smart way to show off a tactics game that depends on systems working together. Archrebel Tactics is not promising a quick arcade distraction: its appeal is the possibility of making a plan, watching it unravel, and finding a better answer on the next attempt. The new demo should give strategy fans a clearer sense of whether its blend of squad management, destructible terrain and replayable missions has the depth to justify keeping an eye on the full release.
