Capcom's Street Fighter film has won the global box office in its opening weekend, taking an estimated $51.1 million worldwide. The result gives the video-game adaptation a strong commercial start, even as early reviews have been considerably less enthusiastic.1

The film made about $31 million in the US and $20.1 million internationally, according to the opening-weekend figures reported by IGN. That put it in first place globally, with the Ryu and Ken-led adaptation playing in 3,575 cinemas.1

A strong start with a mixed reception

The commercial result arrives alongside a divided critical response. IGN reports a 44 score on IMDb's critics listing and a 41% critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while the audience score cited in its report was 79% positive. IGN's own review awarded the film 6/10.1

Those numbers do not make the opening a clean victory. The film has attracted attention for its fight scenes and deliberately heightened take on Capcom's world, but the early critical split means its longer-term performance will matter more than this first weekend. A strong launch can establish an audience; it cannot, by itself, settle whether the adaptation has legs.1

Why the opening matters

The movie is a live-action adaptation of Capcom's fighting-game series, directed by Kitao Sakurai and led by Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken Masters and Callina Liang as Chun-Li. The official film site places the story around the World Warrior Tournament and confirms its 16 October theatrical release.2

The opening also gives Street Fighter a useful comparison point with recent video-game films. IGN notes that 2021's Mortal Kombat made $22.5 million domestically in its post-lockdown-era debut, while Mortal Kombat 2 opened to $63 million worldwide earlier this year.1 Those comparisons are not directly like-for-like, but they show the size of the audience the genre can still reach when a recognisable franchise gets a wide cinema release.

The film's next test is whether word of mouth can keep that audience coming back after the first weekend. For now, Street Fighter has landed the opening-round win: a sizeable global debut, a clear lead at the box office and a reception that remains much more contested than the headline number suggests.12

Our opinion

The useful story here is not that Street Fighter has been universally embraced — it plainly has not. It is that a mixed-reviewed game adaptation has still opened strongly enough to lead the global box office. That makes the film commercially significant, while the critical divide leaves the sequel question wide open.
