Space Marine 2 reveals Year 3 - and the Apothecary

Patch 15 arrives on 1 October with a mode that hands you the Heretic Astartes, and Saber has finally confirmed the Apothecary class for early 2027.

Space Marine 2 has been out for two years this month, and Saber Interactive has celebrated by answering the question its players have been asking since launch. Patch 15 lands on 1 October as the Anniversary Update, and the Year 3 roadmap finally confirms the Apothecary class for the first quarter of 2027.

What is actually going on

The headline addition is Chaos Siege, a mode that flips the war around. You play as Heretic Astartes fighting for control of Avarax, cutting through the Tyranid swarm while Imperial forces and loyalist Space Marines try to stop you taking the hive city. Two sectors ship with the update and Saber says a third is already in the works.

Crucible is the second new mode, and it is aimed squarely at players who have run out of ways to make the game difficult. You earn Crucible XP and unlock the Lamenters armour set, and the Chapter Chaplain in the Battle Barge hands out Penances: personal debuffs built to make late-game missions hurt. Every class has its own set and its own progression, so Tactical Crucible XP only unlocks armour for the Tactical. The Penances themselves run across six escalating tiers, and you can stack as many as you like on top of a minimum that rises with each tier - Tier 1 asks for two, Tier 3 for six. A Tactical Penance, for instance, can weaken your Auspex Scan.

Patch 15 also adds the One-Handed Thunder Hammer for the Tactical, Assault, Bulwark and Techmarine classes. It is quick, and holding the attack button charges it into an area blow. Three heroic weapons arrive beside it - the Frost Axe variant of the Power Axe, a Power Maul version of the One-Handed Thunder Hammer, and the Iron Hands Auto Bolt Rifle - along with new armour pieces including a Black Templar double shoulder pad, Mark VI Corvus, an Iron Halo and unhelmed Raven Guard and White Scars helmets.

The Tactical gets the biggest rework

Most of the Tactical's skill tree has been rewritten to open up different builds, and the class swaps its Signal Jammer perk for a new Signature Perk that lets it carry a Bolt Rifle as a secondary weapon. That rifle shares its versions and perk tree with the primary Bolt Rifle, which should make the class far less painful to level twice. Melee picks up the Power Axe and Power Sword as well, though equipping any of the three melee weapons removes the primary gun, so there is a real trade to make.

Wargear Sharing 2.2 brings a third Wargear slot and lets you wear capes, tabards and iron halos, with new Ordeals unlocking six tabards for Vanguard and Heavy, two for Assault and four robes for Vanguard and Heavy. The patch's two Season Pass sets are a Space Wolves Champion Pack for the Bulwark, which includes a One-Handed Thunder Hammer skin, and an Exorcists Cosmetic Pack of helmet, pauldrons, gauntlets and breastplate.

What Year 3 actually contains

Patch 16 lands later in 2026 with a new PvP mode built around Weekly Stratagems, borrowing the PvE structure that players already know. The rest is a 2027 plan: new Operations, new weapons and reworks to some of the game's core systems, the Apothecary class with Patch 17, and five Cosmetic and Champion Packs across the year with the final one left blank. Saber has also left two riddles on the roadmap, promising something that expands customisation options by 33% and something that will put its streaming technology to the test. The Apothecary gets a Champion skin in the update after it arrives, the same way the Techmarine did. The studio is taking questions from players in a Reddit Q&A with its Game Director on Monday 28 September.

Our opinion

Two years in, this is the most confident Saber has sounded about Space Marine 2. The Apothecary is the class the community has been begging for since the Techmarine arrived, and naming it for the first quarter of 2027 rather than teasing it again is the right call. Chaos Siege is the smarter move, though. Giving players the Heretic Astartes in a full siege mode costs the studio a lot of animation and netcode work, and it answers the complaint that the game's PvP is where all the interesting asymmetry lives. The Crucible debuff system is the sort of thing that could quietly become the reason people keep playing, provided the Penances are tuned to be cruel rather than annoying. Our one raised eyebrow goes to the cosmetics cadence: five packs across a year is a steady drip, and the single-handed thunder hammer skin bundled with the Space Wolves set hints at how the studio intends to keep funding all of this.
