Sega has cancelled its much-hyped Super Game project after deciding the proposed service would have to grow enormously to match its intended scale, according to reporting from GamesIndustry.biz and Video Games Chronicle. The decision marks a sharp retreat from one of the company’s most ambitious recent plans.
GamesIndustry.biz reports that Sega president Shuji Utsumi described the project as risky and said the company had concluded it would need to become enormous to match the scale of the service. Sega’s wider strategic rethink follows a reported net loss, although the company’s comments do not mean every live-service or online project is being abandoned.

Our opinion
Sega is right to pull the plug if the project’s required scale had become a financial black hole. The games industry has spent years discovering that “make it live service” is not a strategy by itself. Sometimes the most expensive feature is knowing when to stop.
