Roblox will let creators ship games as standalone apps

Roblox has set out a plan it calls Roblox Everywhere, promising creator-made games as standalone apps on mobile, PC and consoles, plus in-browser play before the end of the year.

Roblox will let creators publish their games as standalone apps on mobile, PC and consoles, with the company supplying the technology and services underneath. The option sits at the centre of a set of changes the company calls Roblox Everywhere, announced at its annual Developers Conference.

Games that leave the Roblox app

Standalone publishing is the headline change. Rather than opening Roblox and choosing a game, a player would install and launch a creator’s title on its own. Roblox has not given a date for the rollout, describing it as something creators will be able to opt into soon.

Two other routes arrive sooner. By the end of the year players will be able to join a game in-browser on Chrome, straight from a game’s Experience Details Page, with no app or install needed and more browsers to follow. Over the next year creators will also be able to switch on offline solo play alongside the live multiplayer mode, with offline play expected by mid-2027 and early access before that.

Beyond 3D multiplayer worlds

Roblox is also pushing past the 3D multiplayer format it is best known for. The engine is gaining an orthographic camera, animated image containers and direct sprite-sheet import to support 2D and puzzle games, alongside new interface effects including blur, text shadows and improved gradients. Support for turn-based and asynchronous multiplayer follows, with a turn-notification system due in Studio Beta in October and a full release by the end of the year.

Elsewhere, a new Friends chat tab follows players between games, voice typing has shipped, and creators will be able to add pre-set Quick Words to their games later this year. Roblox says Quick Words are reviewed for policy compliance before they go live.

The announcements landed as Roblox marked 20 years, with 29 billion hours played in the last quarter across more than 180 countries. Its mobile-first Build tool, currently in alpha in New Zealand, has produced around 9,000 games, and 71 per cent of the people who made them had never used Roblox Studio before.

Our opinion

Letting games leave the Roblox app is the most consequential thing the company has announced in years, and it cuts both ways. It gives creators a real route to an audience that never installs Roblox, which is a genuine win for small studios. It also starts dismantling the walled garden that made the platform so profitable, because a standalone app is a game people can find, review and buy without Roblox in the middle. The browser player is the sharper move of the two: a link that starts a game instantly, with no install, is how you win players who would never otherwise bother. The detail that matters now is what Roblox takes from a sale it no longer hosts.
