The Risk of Rain team will put a release date on Hallowed Concepts next week. In a Steam community update published on 2 October, the studio confirmed it will reveal when the expansion and its accompanying free update arrive during the iii initiative showcase, which streams on 8 October at 9am PDT.

The same post confirmed that Hallowed Concepts will ship alongside a sizeable free update containing a long list of balance changes, fixes and adjustments to existing content. A short preview video runs through a handful of them, and the team credits feedback from players on its Discord server for shaping the list.

Hallowed Concepts is already on Steam

Hallowed Concepts has its own Steam page, where the expansion currently sits without a release date. It joins Survivors of the Void, Seekers of the Storm and Alloyed Collective, the three paid expansions that have followed the base game since its 2020 launch, so the pattern of a paid expansion paired with a free update is now well established for Risk of Rain 2.

The iii initiative showcase is billed as 45 minutes of back-to-back trailers, world premieres, gameplay reveals and launch dates from a group of partner studios, so Hallowed Concepts may not be the only date set during the stream.

Our opinion

Risk of Rain 2 has settled into a comfortable rhythm: roughly one paid expansion a year, shadowed by a free update that quietly rebalances whatever the last one nudged out of shape. Hallowed Concepts looks set to follow that script, and the decision to date it inside a shared showcase rather than a solo trailer says plenty about the value of company. For players, the free half of the update may be the more interesting half, because the balance pass is where a five-year-old roguelike either stays sharp or starts to creak under its own pile of survivors, items and stacked multipliers.
