Retroid's Pocket Duo Lite takes dual screens down to $149

Retroid has opened orders for a cheaper take on its dual-screen Android handheld, starting at $149 with TFT panels and two Qualcomm Dragonwing chip options.

Retroid has opened orders for the Pocket Duo Lite, a cheaper version of its dual-screen Android handheld. The listing went live on the company's own store on 20 September with a $149 starting price, and there are two tiers to choose between: the Duo Lite and the faster Duo Lite Plus.

It slots underneath the Pocket Duo that Retroid listed ten days earlier at $269, and it keeps the part that matters. Both units carry a 5.5-inch primary screen and a second panel in the lid for dual-screen layouts, which is the feature people buy these machines for in the first place.

Two tiers, two chips

The Duo Lite runs Qualcomm's Dragonwing QCS6125, an 11nm part with four Cortex-A73 cores at 2GHz, four Cortex-A53 cores at 1.8GHz and an Adreno 610 GPU at 950MHz. Buyers can pair it with 4GB of memory and 64GB of storage for $149, or 6GB and 128GB for $169, and it ships with Android 15, Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0.

The Duo Lite Plus steps up to the Dragonwing Q-7790 on a 4nm process, with one Cortex-A720 at 2.6GHz, four more at 2.4GHz and three Cortex-A520 cores at 1.8GHz, backed by an Adreno 722 at 1.15GHz. That model comes only with 8GB of memory and 128GB of storage for $219, and adds Android 16, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4 and DisplayPort output at 4K 60Hz over USB-C.

Where the money was saved

The trade-downs are visible on the panels. The Duo Lite uses TFT screens at 60Hz where the Pocket Duo uses AMOLED at 120Hz, and its secondary display is a 4.2-inch 1280x960 panel against the Duo's 4.5-inch screen. The base Lite charges at 18W rather than 27W and has no video output at all, so it will not dock to a television the way the Plus and the Pocket Duo can.

Everything else is shared. Both new models list active cooling, a 6000mAh battery, Hall-effect analogue sticks, digital L2 and R2 triggers, a microSD slot, a 3.5mm headphone jack and USB 3.1 Type-C, and both measure 158 x 95 x 23.2mm at 372g. Five finishes are offered: Black, Ice Blue, Clear Purple, a GameCube-inspired "GC" scheme and a grey "16Bit" option.

Coupons and shipping

Retroid is discounting both tiers during the pre-order phase. A coupon code takes $14 off either Duo Lite configuration until 30 September, and a second code takes $20 off the Plus until 31 October. The listing says Lite orders ship from 17 September, with the Plus following in mid-November. Customers outside China should expect import duty on top of the dollar price, which Retroid does not quote.

Our opinion

Retroid has spent two years building a handheld for people who already own too many of them, and the Duo Lite is the first time the company has aimed a dual-screen machine at anyone who is not already convinced. Cutting to TFT panels at 60Hz is the right place to economise, because the second screen exists for DS and 3DS layouts rather than for colour accuracy, and the emulation audience Retroid sells to has never needed AMOLED to be happy.

The obvious question is whether the Lite Plus makes the Lite pointless. For $50 more you get the same chip as the $269 Pocket Duo, twice the memory and storage, Wi-Fi 6E and video out. That is a steep jump for a small outlay, and Retroid may find its $149 headline exists mainly to sell the $219 model. UK and European pricing is not published, so the real cost of either will depend on duty that nobody has quoted yet.
